I include the "they're both awful!" centrists in this. Oh, are they? One is a man who physically, sexually, and financially abused his (ex-)wife, and the other is a woman you don't find likeable. I see you.

Man, Depp v. Heard continues to be an excellent litmus test for ppl whose opinions can be safely discarded. Person is vocally anti-Heard? They're an easily led dumbass, an easily led misogynist, or both.

(I will say that I broadly agree that "take meds and see if they work" is a pretty good test -- I just don't think the determinant is as simple as calm vs. not. Like, I'm a twitchy mofo on and off meds, just, meds give me the dopamine to do things like "make dinner" and "do taxes." Life-changing!)

Sure, but I think your "usually" is still overstating it. ADHD is complex and can present so differently in different populations that I'm very wary of broad generalizations even with a caveat.

Personally, there IS a "calming" effect in the sense of I can pay attention at a meeting or do dishes w/o feeling like my brain is trying to claw its way out of my skull, but it def. also feels like casting Haste on myself physically, at least at peak concentration. But I'm sure experiences differ.

As I said elsewhere, that's not really a good diagnostic, esp. because people who take stimulants recreationally often take higher doses than what would be prescribed, & don't take them every day -- ofc they're flipping out. I have ADHD and they definitely still act as stimulants when I take them.

One of the tell-tale signs my pill's kicked in is that I become more talkative for a bit (levels off after ehhh 45 minutes or so.) I've also accidentally taken a double dose once (by forgetting I'd taken the first one) and lol the full-body anxiety had me unable to sit still. Would not recommend.

Sasha @orphea.bsky.social · 23/03/2026
Ehhh this isn't actually as true as people think. I have ADHD (more inattentive type) and take Vyvanse. Yes, it allows me to focus and get things done, but it most definitely also has a stimulant effect on me, and it especially had a stimulant effect when I first started taking it.

It also requires the victim to be hurt AGAIN before any actual action gets taken, even though he's clearly already proven that he's capable of violence... which, given this guy had a history of strangulation, is extra terrifying.

My health insurance through work covers chiropractors, naturopaths, and Christian Science "practitioners", but not registered dietitians. 🙃 Like, what's next? Miasma theory? (Though lbr, the naturopaths peddle that already.)

Travel to the protest is mandatory if you want to protest. Breathing in COVID at the protest is optional. Just say you don't want vulnerable or disabled people in your movement because you think they make it look bad. Oh, wait, that's exactly what you did. "Why go to the protest at all", indeed.

Sasha @orphea.bsky.social · 30/01/2026
I'm so glad I have your condescending permission to protect my shitty immune system. I super love that leftists stopped giving a shit about vulnerable people the moment it got inconvenient. It's extra great to now see those same people demonize one of the few protections individuals have left.

"No, no, you don't understand, the stupid blanket statement this person made had several invisible caveats" Anyway, let's not pretend this person and people like them aren't eager to assume everyone who masks is just a ~coward~ regardless of reason

Sasha @orphea.bsky.social · 30/01/2026
It's several times more deadly than the flu, and long COVID is also disabling people all over. Worse, the significant cardiovascular damage it does isn't immediately symptomatic. But I get it, masks are inconvenient, so it's easier to pretend it's no longer a problem. Who's the coward now?

See, it's interesting: the alt-right trucker convoy occupied my city a few years back, and those fuckers were honking their shitty trucks 24/7 with the explicit goal of making sure no one who lived in the area could sleep or function normally. Buck didn't seem to think it was a problem then.

There are many reasons to help people. One that I think gets overlooked sometimes is: helping others often helps you. So if you feel like shit, don’t flagellate yourself in the dark. Leave your head a little. Extend some kindness. You can’t do everything, but you can do some things.
A black and white comic page. A person sits at the bottom of a whole, endlessly anxiety rambling to themself. A speech bubble yelling “HELP!” cuts through. The person stands up and peers out the hole, seeing a figure lying injured on the ground with people starting to gather around. The person says “Hold on, man! I got you!” Another person in the corner says “Y’all need water? Bandages?”

I don't think finding people was as much of a problem as a lack of willingness to actually prosecute them. Then and now.

Consider that some people don't want to get or spread COVID. You know, the thing that's still disabling and killing people every day, and is quite easily acquired in a dense crowd. The ID barrier is a bonus.

(I don't think you were doing that, to be clear, but I see it a little bit in the comments here. I get the reaction! But I do think the businesses speaking out about this are doing good.)

Sasha @orphea.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
Tbh while it's easy to be dismissive of the businesses complaining (especially with that headline), I think this kind of article is exactly what we want -- it bolsters the effectiveness of the boycott, and US business owners pointing out that Trump's policies hurt their own is great.

After a year+ of procrastinating, I've finally put together @nukit.bsky.social's Tempest air purifier, inspired by the fact I'm desperately trying to avoid my partner's COVID. 😭 Anyway, it's sleek as hell and runs so, so quiet. I particularly like the handles built into the top panel.

N... not to sound dismissive, but I really think both Canadians and Americans severely overestimate how much the rest of the world cares or notices? I don't think most of Europe even remembers Canada exists most of the time, tbh, let alone pays attention to the flag. Sorry.

From what I understand, Capital Pride withdrew their support statement for Palestine following pressure from the mayor of our city. Seems strange that you have so much to say about how marginalized groups ought to behave but have no censure for a privileged man wielding his power to silence others.

(Also, given the rate of domestic violence in Russia -- no, thank you on the legalized gun ownership. So many more women and children would end up dead.)

Sasha @orphea.bsky.social · 23/08/2025
The guns are not the difference. Russia's suppression of protests was and is brutal. A few guns won't make a difference against overwhelming state power, neither in Russia nor in the US.

I've never been to Columbia, but large campuses usually have private security who can remove and trespass people. I'm guessing that's who would get called to enforce these shitty policies. :/

Sorta related, but: one of the first times I saw someone call out the exploitative nature of Shocking Depraved Murder Procedurals, it was one of the creators of Leverage. As someone who had been a big fan of Criminal Minds and true crime podcasts, it made me reconsider some things.
