No, probably neither. He probably wouldn't grasp it. He's still on a ship to or from 'Spring Break Iraq 2003' and only beginning to understand what a circuitous path life can take.

Maybe it's the 90s kid nostalgia. I don't know. But I can't stop laughing at this and that's actually a relief after my anxiety alarm clock went off (again) a couple hours before my actual alarm clock.

Good review of Parallel Texts for learning Japanese. I didn't know about this when I first started reading in Japanese but wish I did. I read the French Parallel Text short stories recently and it was a great way to take of the training wheels. Gave me the confidence to go after novels #langsky

About to start something new at work but I dont want to put JPN reading aside while I study up, so i found a compromise. Sometimes the best way to study a language is to have fun/do what you were going to fo anyway, just in that language.

Aber es is nicht meine..."

Semi-shameless plug for 目取真俊's short story: 「ブラジルおじいの酒」which deals with Brazilian Japanese through the lens of the Okinawan diaspora. Find it in the 「平和通と名付けられた街を歩いて」短編集, which has the most stark and moving cover for a collection of stories that cover "postwar" Okinawan trauma in fiction.

The "y" in archaic spellings like "ye olde bookshope" isn't meant to be a "y" as we know it now but the Old English letter "þ" or "thorn" and pronounced "th". This was converted to "y" with the invention of movable type printing but still meant to be pronounced "th" þ survives in Icelandic today

Very interesting thread on a skill I assumed was inborn to all but me in grad school, something I knew of as the 'grad school skim'. This thread impresses on one the need for good, clear writing as well. (God what a lost art as evidenced by my work inbox (and admittedly the outbox sometimes...))
