I found a buyer looking for a vintage car that his nephew (who was just learning to drive) and brother-in-law could restore as a father and son project. Ideal. He inspected the car, made an offer, and I accepted.

After my mum died two years ago I became responsible for administering her estate, including the VW which had sat there for the intervening period. I didn't want to keep it, but also didn't want it to be scrapped.

One of my sister's passions was Bella, her 1973 VW Beetle, which she and her boyfriend were working to restore together. After she died my mum couldn't bear to let it go, or even think about it, so she just put a weather cover over it and left it on the drive.

She was just starting a new job as early years teacher at a special needs school, where she was already well liked by her colleagues and adored by the children. Her death was, to put it mildly, devastating to everyone who knew her.

I’ve been thinking about The Rats of NIMH a lot recently

I was reminded of a story I had read at the Boniface Estate when I was looking for things written about rats. It was about a woman in a small town who bought a vacuum cleaner. Her name was Mrs. Jones, and up until then she, like all of her neighbors, had kept her house spotlessly clean by using a broom and a mop.
But the vacuum cleaner did it faster and better, and soon Mrs. Jones was the envy of all the other housewives in town-so they bought vacuum cleaners, too.
The vacuum cleaner business was so brisk, in fact, that the company that made them opened a branch factory in the town. The factory used a lot of electricity, of course, and so did the women with their vacuum cleaners, so the local electric power company had to put up a big new plant to keep them all running. In its furnaces the power plant burned coal, and out of its chinmeys black smoke poured day and night, blanketing the town with soot and making all the floors dirtier than ever. Still, by working twice as hard and twice as long the women of the town were able to keep their floors almost as clean as they had been before Mrs. Jones ever bought a vacuum cleaner in the first place.

OK so aluminum WAS the original version BUT it got changed to aluminium for consistency with the other chemical elements that have an -ium ending, and the only reason Americans say "aluminum" is because Noah Webster preferred that spelling and omitted the other version from his dictionary.

I'm kind of stunned at how spacious and airy the rooms are without all the clutter (also the curtains are getting a long-overdue wash and there's so much more daylight coming in). The downside is that I have no idea where I stashed everything out of sight during the pre-cleaning frenzy. D:
