Here's a nice new study on the diversity of the Eros blue. Last summer I saw one of the more differentiated of the group, Taygetos blue. It was the first time I visited the higher parts of Taygetos and it surely ended in my top of favorite European butterfly sites! Check ALT for info!
Taygetos blue, Polyommatus eros menelaos

Taygetos mountain, Greece, app. 2000m

Here you can clearly see that the upperside is paler blue than in P. icarus, with a clear broad dark edge.Taygetos blue, Polyommatus eros menelaos

Taygetos mountain, Greece, app. 2000m

The underside in eros blue males is often cold grey with the marginal pattern with smaller & neater spots than in P. icarus.Taygetos blue, Polyommatus eros menelaos

Taygetos mountain, Greece, app. 2000m

Copula, in a lot of populations males emerge earlies than females so they can already establish a territory when the females start emerging. This male is clearly already battered by territory fights and the harsh Peloponnesian sun while the female is neat & fresh.

🌸 Day 1 of our Crete in Autumn tour, exploring the White Mountains! Today’s highlights included: Crocus pumilus, Colchicum cretense, Allium tardans and Narcissus obsoletus. The first three are endemic, thus grow naturally nowhere else but Crete. A lovely start to our week! #BSBICorporateSponsor

Another lovely Colias clouded yellow species in my summer of them, this Moorland Clouded Yellow was a thoroughly obliging and decent individual, flying past me in Arctic Sweden and, the moment a cloud obscured the sun, dropping down to roost right in front of us. Sometimes a bit of cloud is good...

Difficult to believe that there have been coordinated mass releases around the south of England . The unprecedented hot summer temperatures surely indicate natural occurrence. It’s a shame we still have to consider the other option though
