many thoughts about the privacy implications of this policy. but one of the things that confuses me most is that platforms like discord and roblox are *excluded*? surely if the motive is protecting children you *want* to encapsulate the pedo game and the most popular messaging platform?
The bill would require "high risk" platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, X, and Facebook, to take "reasonable steps" to check users were over the age of 16.

The reasonable steps included using existing account information, facial age estimation, digital ID services, and formal ID.

Messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Discord, and online games like Roblox, are not included in the bill.

AI chatbots that are primarily for productivity, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, are also out of scope, but social AI companions are covered by the ban.

really minor realisation here. My HRT costs in New Zealand are actually... dirt fucking cheap? If you take *only* the costs for the first "hey doc I want to start HRT" to now (4 months), I've paid NZ$20 ~ US$11. The biggest expense by far is my petrol to drive to my doc (on the other side of AKL).
A table breaking down the costs for my (medical) gender transition. The table entries are as follows:
First Consultation: Direct cost $0, Fuel costs $15.65
Bloodwork: Direct cost $0, Fuel costs $0
Second Consultation: Direct cost $0, Fuel costs $15.65
Estrogen: Direct cost $5, Fuel costs $0
Spiro: Direct cost $5, Fuel costs $0
Bloodwork: Direct cost $0, Fuel costs $0
Third Consultation: Direct cost $0, Fuel costs $15.65
Estrogen (higher dose): Direct cost $5, Fuel costs $0
Spiro (higher dose): Direct cost $5, Fuel costs $0
Fourth Consultation (projected): Direct cost $0, Fuel costs $15.65

First time I've ever actually held this. It's thicker than I expected (and I wrote the damn thing!)
A bound thesis. The title is "The Next Generation: Refining the Standard Population Synthesis Model to Better Predict Stellar Population Properties". It is written by Sean Richards. The bottommost text reads "A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Physics, the University of Auckland, 2025. This thesis is for examination purposes only and is confidential to the examination process." It is held in front of a colourful PC with a city background image. Random detritus, evidence that OP needs to clean her room, is scattered on the floor.

my underlying data (the Mean hourly was my first shot at making a sensible sound, I gave up on that). I used sonipy to sonify the data.
Mean hourly temperature across six stations in melbourne (Olympic Park, Essendon, Viewbank, Moorabbin, Melbourne Airport, Laverton, and the mean). Data starts at 18ish at midnight, drops to 16ish at 5am, rises to a peak of about 43-44ish at 5ish pm, and then drops off to 30ish at 8pm.

Got the data from the BOM, generated one track per station (at half-integer harmonics of A440) for six stations, and overlaid them. the result is.... something. (I tried running the .wav through AnthemScore to generate a MIDI so I could get it via Piano -- understandably AS threw a hissy fit).

as far as I can tell it's the closest to an algorithm that bsky has. It's a mix of people you follow + people you don't, and it gets inserted periodically between posts in the main feed, like below. I follow Sarah (why top post is in feed) but I don't follow Brandon (bottom post is from What's Hot).
A series of two posts. The first is by "Rudy wants revolution.", reposted by Sarah Tuttle, reading:

"reminder that bsky.team only has jurisdiction over what happens on their servers. If you self-host or are hosted by blacksky.app they cannot remove your posts.

they can hide it on bsky.app but it will still be up elsewhere.
signups and migrations are open."

This is a quote post of a post by "Jay" which reads:

"Violence is always unacceptable, and threats of violence have no place in public discourse. Our thoughts are with Charlie Kirk and his family."

The second is a post by "Brandon Sheffield", which is from "What's Hot Classic":

"We fostered a dog off and on for a year. He kept getting returned because folks couldn't manage his (imo) pretty easy issues. If he went back to the shelter he'd have been euthanized. Eventually we found him a great home with an older lesbian couple and now 2 years later he's doing fall photoshoots."

It is an image post of a dog (a German Shepard puppy, I think? im not good with dog breeds) on an autumn background.

how in the hell do you go out of business as the university bookstore
The University of Auckland has been notified that UBIQ – the independently owned and operated bookstore on the City Campus – was put into liquidation on Wednesday. The bookstore is expected to remain open for the start of Semester Two until 31 August.

Further details are not available at this point, but we will continue to keep our community updated. The University is working closely with the UBIQ liquidator with a view to minimising disruptions for staff and students.

I'm so confused by this. Either they had a Hindi speaker verify the message (who could've just translated it? Rather than using Generative AI?), or they just blindly said "yeah this AI result is Hindi enough" and posted this. Either way -- why is Generative AI necessary here?

Screenshot from the New Zealand Hansard. Reads as follows:

Rt Hon Chris Hipkins: Very good, thank you. How is it showing respect to Kiwi women, as he claims, for the Government under urgency to unilaterally cancel pay equity claims covering hundreds of thousands of New Zealand women who are being paid less than men simply because they are women?

Rt Hon WINSTON PETERS: Well, the last statement is categorically incorrect. The reality is we had all these—[Interruption] Do you want to hear the answer?

SPEAKER: I think—

Rt Hon WINSTON PETERS: Or do you want to hear your stupid voice?

SPEAKER: No, no.

Rt Hon WINSTON PETERS: You can't have both.

SPEAKER: Mr Peters—[Interruption]. OK, look. It's always an excitable time when the House is in urgency. But that's no excuse for things to break down quite the way they are. So we'll hear the balance of this question and answer exchange in silence. The Rt Hon Winston Peters, do you want to add to that answer?

federal australian election results for the division of Dickson. With 2.6% of the vote counted, Ali France (Labor) holds 53% of the vote compared to 47% for Peter Dutton (Liberal). This is a two-party preferred count, with only 2.6% counted, so is NOT an indication of the final result necessarily.

fucking banger reporting from PinkNews
This afternoon (25 April), the gender of a fictional unborn pig became the most talked-about story in the UK, with “Peppa Pig gender reveal” soaring to the top of Google’s trending news chart, pushing “Ukraine war latest” into second place.

Listen to this article
0:06 / 4:47

Back in February, it was announced that impossibly popular kids’ TV show Peppa Pig would be getting a new character: a sibling for Peppa and George, after Mummy Pig announced that she ~~and Daddy Pig had been having vigorous and productive unprotected sex~~ was pregnant.

To keep the hype going, Peppa Pig’s handlers Hasbro International decided to stage an elaborate gender reveal party at Battersea Power Station today. The station’s famous towers will either light up pink or blue at dusk to signal whether Mummy Pig is going to give birth to a piglet with a penis, or a piglet with a vagina.

Six panel meme. From left to right, top to bottom:

“Basic maths: square root of negative one is impossible.”
“Advanced maths: square root of negative one = i“
“Basic physics: 3 states of matter”
“Advanced physics: 3, no 5, no 7 states of matter”
“Basic biology: two sexes, male and female”
“Advanced biology: sex ≠ gender” with a display of a distribution of gender identities, peaking at male and female, but including all genders in that line.

All six panels except the last have a stick figure at a whiteboard explaining this to a silent stick figure at a desk. In the last panel, the stick figure at the desk screams “NoOoOoO my two genderinos!”

This thesis is actually nearly done, holy shit. It is I think the second longest thing I've ever written currently. It might crack #1 by the time it's finished, but there's still ~18k words to beat that for sure. (graph is a little out of date -- I had a bug in the compiler that may not be fixed)
A line graph. The x-axis is time, starting in August 2023. The y-axis is words written. The title is "Thesis Word Count (Updated every time I compile)". The general trend is that words increase with time, with a few drops from accidentally removed chapters, etc. It stars at 9381 words on August 6, 2023, and ends with 41555 words on March 22, 2025.
