I went to a play last night which was "straight people As You Like It, but I swear they're good" and it appears I fared better than you. Outdoor or non-micced plays have the opposite problem. Straight folk aren't loud enough, but these knew their stuff.

I use Decibel X app to measure experiences like this. They should have very visible safety warnings that not carrying earplugs at such events expose you to permanent harm, and where it exceeds ear protection, those ones should have their plugs pulled.
