Faster map tile updates for mappers isn't the only win. 🌍💚 The #Mapnik improvements also save us around 10kWh of electricity on a typical weekday. That extra efficiency has also given us enough headroom to postpone hardware upgrades. 🚀

Call for code contributors: explaining a cryptic icon
As has been mentioned before many times, the maintainers of the openstreetmap website could use some help! There are so many open issues and PRs needing input, and the team can only cover so much ground. So here’s an idea: using the forum to bring attention to potential opportunities for new contributors. On today’s issue: Required skills: some knowledge of Bootstrap and web accessibility, or at least being willing to learn them! Note that we use Bootstrap to simplify our styles, and prefer ...

20 years of openstreetmap-website
openstreetmap-website, the codebase that powers our website and API, turns 20 years old today. OSM isn’t really the place for nostalgia,[1] but the young ’uns here[2] should know that it used to be very different around here before openstreetmap-website. No changesets to leave nasty comments on. No notes to close without reading. We even tried out showing adverts on the homepage to logged-out users.[3] That’s why we can’t decorate our donation banners with Jimmy Wales’ smile like Wikipedia does...
