UB is the only Spanish member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and has helped shape a roadmap of recommendations for universities' progress on open science. It's also an early signatory of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information.

000

Open Technology Research @opentechresearch.org · 17/07/2026

UB has been a pioneer of openness in Spanish research: an institutional open access policy since 2011, a repository giving free access to its scientific output (from theses to papers), and a dedicated open science commission since 2018.

000

Open Technology Research @opentechresearch.org · 17/07/2026

UB hosts three research foundations: the Barcelona Science Park Foundation (PCB, including IRB Barcelona), the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), and the Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBELL). It's also a degree-awarding body of IBEI.

000

Open Technology Research @opentechresearch.org · 17/07/2026

UB is a public research university founded in 1450, one of the oldest in Europe. It's also one of Spain's largest, with over 60,000 students across six campuses and 16 faculties.

Each archetype is hosted differently and pursues a distinct primary goal, whether that's coordinating national policy, supporting one institution, or pooling capability across a sector. The study links this structure to context and maturity, not a single 'correct' model.
