We all joined the community for different reasons, but many of us stayed because of the relationships and partnerships we built along the way, connections that run deeper than the code.

With openness in AI making headlines, we must educate policymakers, producers, and users of these technologies about what open-weight and Open Source AI mean for the four software freedoms: the freedom to use, study, modify, and share without the need to ask for permission from the rights holder.

The OSI joins the Open Forum for AI (OFAI) in supporting calls for the U.S. to develop more open models.

The OSI is coming to All Things Open with a track designed to connect developers with the big policy conversations shaping our ecosystem.

Members Newsletter – August 2026: Every model making headlines today, open or closed, sits on top of Open Source code, runs on Open Source infrastructure, and is based on openly shared research. That's not sentiment, it's just the history of how we got here. None of this exists without the Open Source community.

Over the last month, the EU has passed two milestones in implementing its Cyber Resilience (CRA) and AI acts. The OSI has been engaged with European policymakers over the past two years to ensure those laws don’t inadvertently harm Open Source.

Every AI system in the headlines today, whether proprietary or Open Source, exists because researchers shared their work openly. That openly shared research produced Open Source software: the frameworks used to train these models, the libraries used to evaluate them, the operating systems, orchestration layers, and inference engines used to run them.
