The #PISA2025 survey results are out and they make for depressing reading: ongoing decline across the board. The historians of the future (assuming they exist) will identify the first decade of the 21st century as "peak civilization". Yet its all endogenous, a malfunctioning political economy.
Diagram from PISA 2025 results showing that the average trend across OECD countries is negative (Figure I.1.5). Performance in PISA 2025 was the lowest in all subjects, significantly below the mean performance observed in any earlier assessment (except PISA 2022, in science). In mathematics, performance remained close to the 2003 level through all assessments up to 2018, then dropped sharply between 2018 and 2025. In reading and science, the strongest performance was observed in 2012
and 2009, respectively, then the trajectory turned negative. See Chapter 2 for further details about PISA trends over time.

Very happy to announce that Open Risk joined the #Digital4Sustainability Community, a European initiative dedicated to advancing digital and sustainability skills required to accelerate the twin transition. More about D4S and the rationale for joining 👇 www.openriskmanagement.com/joining-digi...
Badge to indicate that Open Risk is now a member of the Digital4Sustainability Community

Digital4Sustainability is a project funded under the EU's Erasmus+ programme. The project is dedicated to accelerating the digital and green transitions (the so-called twin transition), both within the ICT sector and across European industries.

The project mission is to develop and implement innovative _training programmes_ that provide professionals and businesses with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving landscape where digital technology and sustainability intersect.

We pledge to actively support the objectives of the Digital4Sustainability Alliance Community by sharing knowledge, contributing to best practice exchange, and promoting lifelong learning opportunities that address the skills needed for Europe’s twin transition.

The paper ends hinting at a public utility, "a common user digital data communication plant designed specifically for the transmission of digital data among a large set of subscribers". 60+ years later the decentral/distributed vision is still largely unfullfiled - but still as relevant as ever.

The difference between centralized, decentralized and distributed communication networks, visualized beautifully by Paul Baran, in a 1962 paper prepared for presentation at the First Congress of Information Systems Sciences (Title: On Distributed Communication Networks)
A visual illustration of three types of communication networks. The diagrams consists of nodes (dots) representing entities that want to communicate (digitally) and edges (lines) that represent communication channels. The centralized design (A) features a central node through which all other nodes must route if they are to communicate with each other. The decentralized design (B) features a hierarchical cluster of nodes. Within each cluster nodes communicate via their central node. Central nodes link also between cluster communications. Finally, the distributed design (C) does not feature central nodes at all. Instead nodes are linked to their neighboors and communication with remote entities must happen via a number of intermediate connections.

The story of the economic impact of "AI" gets curiouser and curiouser. In a new working paper the authors surveyed 6000 international CFO's, CEO's etc. and they seem to say that while nearly everybody is using it, nobody actually sees meaningful impact 🧐 #econsky www.nber.org/papers/w34836
We present the first representative international data on firm-level AI use. We survey almost 6000 CFOs, CEOs and executives from stratified firm samples across the US, UK, Germany and Australia. We find four key facts. First, around 70% of firms actively use AI, particularly younger, more productive firms. Second, while over two thirds of top executives regularly use AI, their average use is only 1.5 hours a week, with one quarter reporting no AI use. Third, firms report little impact of AI over the last 3 years, with over 80% of firms reporting no impact on
either employment or productivity. Fourth, firms predict sizable impacts over the next 3 years, forecasting AI will boost productivity by 1.4%, increase output by 0.8% and cut employment by 0.7%. We also survey individual employees who predict a 0.5% increase in employment in the
next 3 years as a result of AI. This contrast implies a sizable gap in expectations, with senior executives predicting reductions in employment from AI and employees predicting net job creation.

As we move deeper into the 2nd quarter of the 21st century, it does not remotely look like the tech utopia we were once promised. The blueprint for humane and sustainable societies is still theoretical, still waiting for aspirational words to translate into actions, inventions, realizations...
A quadrant diagram that organizes conceptually two important dimensions of technological development: on the vertical axis, the degree to which technology supports environmental sustainability and on the horizontal axis the degree to which it supports humane, democratic societies where digital tech is empowering rathern than subjugating and manipulating individuals. The lower left quadrant (inhumane and unsustainable is occupied by the USA). The upper left quadrant (inhumane but green) by China. The upper right quadrant, designated as "The Good Place" is empty. While there is aspirational talk about this being the desirable target, especially in the European Union, it remains very far from being an imminent reality.

The Open Risk Academy course "Introduction to GeoJSON" introduces this popular format for the encoding of geospatial information #datascience #geospatial Description: www.openriskmanagement.com/academy-cour... Course: www.openriskacademy.com/course/view.... Code: github.com/Open-Risk-Ac...
Visual representing GeoJSON objects from the Open Risk Acaademy course: An Introduction to GeoJSON. In four different panels the key elements of the format are illustrated.

This course is a CrashProgram (short course) introducing the GeoJSON format for working with geographical data. The course is at an introductory technical level. It requires some familiarity with data specifications such as JSON and a very basic knowledge of Python.

GeoJSON is widely adopted as format for representing geospatial features in web-based mapping applications. Many modern mapping geospatial visualization libraries, such as Leaflet and Mapbox, support GeoJSON natively.

## Course objectives

* You will be able to confidently discuss the geojson standard
* You will be able to dive into geojson related development projects with confidence

The course is live at the [Open Risk Academy](https://www.openriskacademy.com/course/view.php?id=53).

## Brief Description

* Step 1: In this first step of the course we start with a high level review of GeoJSON
* Step 2: In this step we review the elements of the GeoJSON specification in some detail with examples
* Step 3: In this step we will go over the _basics_ of using geojson in python
* Step 4: In this final step we cover a number of special topics that are quite useful to be aware of
