Special thanks to Michael Johnson for leading this effort and implementing.

Releases will be decoupled from ODM releases: This allows changes in ODM that affect the interface to be properly connected before releasing and for us to test the interface for regressions.
100
OpenDroneMap @opendronemap.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Versions will match the ODM release it wraps (ie. nodeodm:3.6.2 wraps odm:3.6.2): This should make it easier for you to know which tag to pull and have confidence it won't be swapped out from under you.

Going forward we are making two big changes to the NodeODM release process:
100
OpenDroneMap @opendronemap.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
While this worked, it was common for release tags to be missed, and it contained the same unexpected behavior as ODM with the :latest tag moving with master.
100
OpenDroneMap @opendronemap.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Prior to ODM 3.5.6, NodeODM tracked the master branch of ODM. Every push to either repository triggered a new :latest image. Release tagging of images was done manually after a review period.

I like clean code and functional programming. I think a lot about how to write neat, readable, easy-to-maintain code that can stay in use for a long time.

How much newer is this new kid? As compared with the competition, rather than dependencies 5-10 years old, major dependencies are 5-10 months old. Ubuntu 20.04 --> Alpine 3.24 Postgres 9.5.25 --> 18 Postgis 2.3.2 --> 3.6.4 Redis 7.0.10 --> Valkey 9.1.0 Django 2.2.27 --> 6.0.7

This is a web front end for OpenDroneMap for those that require a modernized web stack for reasons of performance and security. How new? As a hard fork of WebODM, it carries forward the functionality of it's ancestor, while updating underlying images, libraries, web framework, and broker (oh my!).

We're keeping the projects coming at OpenDroneMap. In addition to crucial library updates on the photogrammetry engine, we needed a new front end. To that end, we announce today OpenDroneMap WebUI: github.com/OpenDroneMap...

Usually library updates aren't this exciting, but it is for the upcoming OpenMVS update. OpenDroneMap uses OpenMVS to make point clouds and meshes. By doing some aggressive updates, and playing with some new algorithms, we get some spectacular potential mesh improvements like over this bistro:

We've got a few library improvement pull requests landing here at OpenDroneMap. First up: OpenSfM 1.1, the underlying structure-from-motion library we depend upon. What kind of extra quality does that bring? Look at the finer detail in the truss structures on Mazyopa Bridge in Lusaka, Zambia!

Pixi landed 3 weeks ago and will be used in the next release. Watch for improved libraries / algorithms / quality of output coming up next!

If you're a developer, now your build process is orders of magnitude faster and only builds what isn't already built and cached somewhere. Faster, easier iterations mean smaller failures and delightful development experience.
100
OpenDroneMap @opendronemap.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
How does pixi help? From a user perspective, this means much simpler commands for accessing your datasets on disk. Direct access with no mount points for the win!

OpenDroneMap @opendronemap.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Topic of the day? Pixi. Rather than our former method of only deploying reliably via docker, OpenDroneMap now builds to binaries on Windows, Linux, Mac + docker using Pixi. Native binaries? Heck yeah. (Also, we fixed the build process for local deploy to Ubuntu.)

Primary income for the org is still through the installers that support this small but energetic team of developers, researchers, and community support folks. Donations always welcome as well.

OpenDroneMap @opendronemap.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
The best way to support the project moving forward is through your participation in community forum community.opendronemap.org that has real people eager to talk drones, photogrammetry, and how to make the most of your data.

And for clarity, we'll still be shipping the same desktop installer under a different name, now with more regular upgrades. We did a lot of work these last few months ensure we can do so sustainably. For the time being, expect that the OpenDroneMap installer will be based on the WebODM code base.

OpenDroneMap @opendronemap.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
We have a lot to do in order to improve core ODM, as well as build other ways to expand the ecosystem: from integrating ODM into differen user workflows to accessible drones and flight planners. Expect lots of questions, conversations, and updates along those axes.

OpenDroneMap strives to be the best free and open source photogrammetry platform and community. In the last year, we have recruited a few developers to continue to improve OpenDroneMap, such as Leonardo who joined as a maintainer earlier this year, and others will be announced soon.

Piero has announced the departure of WebODM from under the OpenDroneMap banner to its own independent project. As a project, OpenDroneMap is deeply indebted to Piero's service over the years, not only as a prodigious developer, but also community member and leader. We will miss him.

For clarity absent in the first post...: The Headwaters Project is a concerted effort to support critical libraries and software projects upstream of our project.

OpenDroneMap @opendronemap.bsky.social · 03/11/2025
The first project that we're funding through the Headwaters Project will upgrade OpenMVS with an improved texturing method, replacing MVS-Texturing. It's a win-win-win: upstream support for a core dependency, improved algorithms in that library, and reduced memory bottlenecks in OpenDroneMap.

One thing maybe not discussed enough is the long term opportunity cost of not investing and supporting open source software. Imagine the more and better Blenders, GIMPs, Firefoxs, InkScapes, QGISs etc we would of had (+ could have) if open source was taken more seriously by government and businesses

And we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the other feature this brings in: you can download the camera locations as a text file now (geo.txt), meaning you can edit it and upload it again in another task with corrections to your camera locations, e.g. adjust your Z to a local datum.

The align interface allows alignment of a dataset with another: think ensuring adjacent datasets align, or multi-temporal datasets need to be well aligned geographically.
