🌸FOOD FOR THE EQUINOX🍂 Food plays an important roll at Higan (彼岸). On the first and last day of the equinoctial week, rice dumplings (団子 'dango') are offered at the family altar. Rice cakes covered in bean jam (botamochi in spring and ohagi in fall) are presented mid-week.

Similar sweets called ohagi and botamochi (glutionous balls of rice caked in bean jam) are eaten or offered at the 2 equinoxes.

Nao-san admires the spring cherry blossoms.

This feels like a quietly appropriate approach to autumn dressing, a loose early #1880s ‘at home’ kind of gown in reddy brown challis, a lightweight blend of wool & silk. 🫸THE LEANING TOWER OF KYŌTO🫷 Looming over the rooftops behind our Flower Teahouse and kimono studio is one of Kyōto's most iconic symbols...the 46m tall Yasaka-no-tō (八坂の塔). The pagoda, last rebuilt in 1440, is all that remains of Hōkan-ji, considered by some to be the city's oldest temple.

Atsuko-san enjoys tea at Seiryu Hotel (Yasaka Pagoda can be seen behind).

🔥🛎️GONG GOODIES🥞👍 Kyōto has many iconic sweets, but one of my favourites is Sasaya Iori's (笹屋伊織) dorayaki. Some of you may be aware of dorayaki from the anime Doraemon, but Sasaya's is something quite different. Both sweets are named after a gong (銅鑼 'dora'). #どら焼き

Sasaya Iori's dorayaki (a long strip of pancake rolled around sweet bean jam and then cut into slices).

A more typical dorayaki...very similar to hotcakes sandwiching bean paste (this one has a full moon and autumn grass branding).

'Seppei' (雪平/せっぺい) is a 'snow like' mochi dough made by kneading rice flour with sugar, meringue, and white bean paste. It is far lighter and softer than usual mochi, and melts easily in the mouth✨ Itotatsu's dessert is available only on the 1st, 10th, 20th and 30th of each month.

Teatime, but hold the tea! 🫸☕️🫷 Itotatsu's (いと達) delightfully soft 'seppei' dumplings (雪平) float in a moreish 'warabimochi-anko' (わらび餅の餡子). The teacup dessert comes with a small bag of salted kinako for sprinkling (naturally I emptied it all)🤗 #あんと塩きなこ
