I think we're going to see some wild spin from that account tomorrow about how this movie is an attack on her family or something

In situations where you have a single guy who has a claim to the throne, and that guy takes an arrow to the eye, that's pretty decisive. But this is limited to "power vested in one dude" type scenarios like feudal succession.

Ongoing Chrisis @ongoingchrisis.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Yes. Not just a leadership vacuum but literally a king vacuum... They had nobody else with a credible claim to the throne. Their whole reason to fight was based around one guy, and that guy died, so no more reason to fight. Prob not a good idea to vest all power in a single dude...

It's not exactly an acting showcase but he's really good in Pitch Black, legitimately scary and with a ton of presence. Shame about the sequels.

I'm very close to finishing my first custom Quake map, qrt_grumpuswumpus. Look for it in the upcoming Rooftops Jam. Having spent many hours making Quake-engine maps back in high school, the tools we have access to now in 2026 are spectacular compared to what we used back then.

Bottom line: this is the show's weakest season, but it's still solid TV, with moments of great TV. Way better than S1 of TNG or Voyager. My wife isn't totally sold yet-- worth noting we're alternating with TNG's outstanding season 6-- but we're getting there.

Finally, the season introduces Marc Alaimo's Gul Dukat. It's a noticeable departure from TNG, where calls to aliens tend to be answered by a random guest actor. In DS9, calls to the Cardassians go to the same guy. He's only in a couple scenes in s1 but he makes an impression. Great writing.

And by "Garruk" I of course meant Garak, played by Andrew Robinson. You wouldn't think a simple tailor would be so important, but like Guinan in TNG, he instantly elevates every episode he appears in. We only see him once in s1 and it's the weakest part of the season.

Bashir also suffers from weak characterization. Having a deliberately grating character is a bold choice but we haven't seen enough of his redeeming qualities yet. His best ep is "Past Prologue," which introduces Garruk, and "the Storyteller" hints at depth, but he's still too grating at this point.
Alexander Siddig as Julian Bashir in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

I haven't mentioned Terry Farrell or Alexander Siddig yet. Dax is mostly forgotten and hasn't had a real chance to shine, and Farrell's acting is the most wooden of the bridge crew (though it will improve). Siddig has some good turns but is downright poor in a challenging role in "the Passenger."

Special credit also to Cirroc Lofton and Aron Eisenberg for depicting what life would be like for actual teenagers in this world-- no Wesley Crusher super intelligence in sight, just boredom, school, girls, plots, and making your own fun with the best friend you found. They're great from the jump.

Colm Meaney has come a long way from his early bit-part TNG appearances. His awkward, understated goodbye with Picard in "Emissary' is pure cinema, like the veteran Stewart is acknowledging Meaney's graduation into a starring role. We also finally get to see a realistic Star Trek marriage.

Ongoing Chrisis @ongoingchrisis.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
The cast also starts out stronger-- less learning curve than TNG. I love the TNG crew but Patrick Stewart aside, it takes a couple seasons for most of the cast to really let it rip from an acting perspective. Not so with DS9-- Brooks, Visitor, Shimerman, and Auberjonois are all good from ep1.
110
Ongoing Chrisis @ongoingchrisis.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
One reason is obviously because the crew had TNG to crib from, and there are early attempts at basically making TNG episodes with a different cast. It takes a bit for the show to decide what it's trying to do (though all three of those eps mentioned above embody DS9 ideals really well).

My wife and I have been watching 80s/90s star trek (her first time) and we're almost through s1 of DS9. The show starts on way better footing than TNG-- some stinkers, but "Duet" is still a 10/10, and "Captive Pursuit" and "Vortex" are also quite good.

Sports carry risk. Top-level athletes take on top-level risk. How many Olympians get badly hurt every two years? The OP is not interested in seriously discussing risk, they're posting to justify their priors (not liking football).

I would've played til 18 if I could've. I wasn't good enough to play at college. The issue is not whether football carries health risks, it's that presenting it as some kind of mass murder industry is not a productive way to discuss how to mitigate those risks. It's reductio ad absurbum

As a teenager, yes. I played football from 13-16 and it's one of the best things I ever did. Teamwork is an essential life skill.

All athletic competition carries the risk of serious injury. The higher the level, the higher the risk. CTE risk is heightened from football, but there are ways to mitigate this through rules changes, equipment, etc. Most people who play football are fine. You're being reactionary.

Ongoing Chrisis @ongoingchrisis.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
No you're right, every time football is on the TV every single player literally dies We can have a serious conversation about a serious issue (CTE) but calling football a death sentence or snuff film is not being serious

The dog postcards memorialize the 300 search and rescue dogs that helped find survivors and human remains in the rubble, sometimes getting injured in the process. I will defend that one. They were good dogs. www.911memorial.org/connect/blog... The picture book, though, yikes.

Wandered into a Boloco in Boston, a burrito chain I used to eat at back in DC, and it turns out I was in the very last location and it's slated to close next month. RIP to an above-average fast casual spot.

right, because we live in a world of zero-sum empathy and kindness and giving those to an animal somehow precludes you from also giving those to a person and also this is somehow uniquely a US problem, the only country in the world where people have dogs
