STATEMENT ON UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE CLAIM

On behalf of One TRiiBE United, the Chicago News Guild withdrew its Unfair Labor Practice charge against The TRiiBE on June 8. Though the National Labor Relations Board did not find the charge worth pursuing, we maintain that the termination was unjust and demonstrates a pattern of behavior by management that led to members organizing to form a union.

We stand firm in our belief that management took action intentionally, knowing the harm it would have on the unionization drive, leading to the eventual defeat of a union in the workplace. Members sought to form a union for employee protections. The NLRB result offers insight into why employees fight to unionize, as laws are set up to protect employers and not workers.

We appreciate all the continued support through this battle. One TRiIBE United was created with thought and care to ensure protections to create a more equitable and sustainable working environment, not only for current employees of The TRiiBE, but for those to come.

An update on our March 25 election.

On March 25, eligible workers at The TRiiBE held their union vote. The outcome of the vote was 1-1, with one employee voting “no” for union representation and one employee voting “yes.” A third ballot was contested by TRiiBE leadership.

While this is not the outcome we’d hoped for, we remain hopeful. A tentative hearing date with the National Labor Relations Board is scheduled for April 15.

In February, a majority of workers signed union authorization cards seeking to join the Chicago News Guild, TNG-CWA Local 34071.

I had the privilege of working alongside Corli a few years ago at City Bureau. Aside from being a joy to work with, she was also a tenacious reporter who always led with curiosity & an open mind. We need more reporters like her, especially now, and it’s disappointing @thetriibe.com doesn’t get that.

After staffers at The TRiiBE unionized two weeks ago, one of their reporters was fired. The union believes she was terminated for union organizing, and are demanding that the member be reinstated and the union be voluntarily recognized.
