I hate this so much too. There is a joke in programming that there are only two difficult challenges in programming: naming things and cache invalidation. This is a cache invalidation problem. This specific one shouldn't be hard but somehow we always get it wrong.

But yeah, I think most games just try to work around the constraint rather than swapping to 64-bit computations. So you try to do a bunch of computations relative to some other context so that you aren't hitting the problematic numbers.

The last big jump was during the Playstation timeframe when they used fixed point and finally moved to this system which is much more flexible. In modern shaders, they still mix and match to save space / computation to sometimes fixed point, sometimes even 16-bit.

So the standard is 32-bit floating point syntax, which is 1 bit for the sign, 8 bits for the exponent, and 23 bits for the number to offset by the exponent. You can use 64-bits, but it is rarely done because hardware rarely natively supports it. This hasn't changed for a LONG time.
