Yesterday’s ‘motivational’ quote in my diary scares me. Tezuka was an amazing cartoonist who really inspires me, but his lifestyle is definitely not something anyone should aspire to imitate…

A quote about Osamu Tezuka’s crazy manga output, 150 000 pages over the course of his 60 year life. 10 finished pages a day.

Snagged my Shortbox fair comics just under the wire in the last hours of the show, phew! Super difficult choice, there were so many I want to read...

Really really enjoyed reading VERSUS this week. A really strong start to a series that had me staying up late thinking about it. Kind of best to go in blind, imo! The writer is ONE, the same person behind One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100.

Christine @onechrispy.bsky.social · 24/06/2024

I was reading this and thought “Ah, this is a Harta series, isn’t it?” Looked it up and I was right! That publisher has such a distinctive look and storytelling vibe.

Some stuff I’ve been reading recently. Skip and Loafer is so good, fantastic character writing! Having a great time with manga. Lucky to have so much good stuff to read.

Recent reads and my fave from the lot. “Status Royale” is a new Viz Original about team eSports & friendship! Feels really modern. Solid rec!

Really liked this young adult graphic novel. Sapphic POC, love & drama, really solid & cute art.

“My Lovesick Life as a ‘90s Otaku” by Nico Nicholson was a fun peek into how otaku were viewed back in the 90s, and the old school way of doing things. All the references to things were really fun to spot. She loves Rukawa from Slam Dunk.

“One More Step, Come Stand By My Side” by Toryumon Takeda is a great little collection of a bunch of short stories. The art is beautiful, and the stories all have that “Harta” magazine feeling. (ya know?)

"#DRCL Midnight Children" by Shin'ichi Sakamoto has a lot of great spooky moments in it. This is retelling of Dracula as a horror manga where all the characters are beautiful boarding school students instead of working adults, but cranking the bizarre horror up to 10! It works surprisingly well.

The cover of #DRCL, showing Mina and Lucy holding hands and facing each other.

Two comic pages of a ship deck in the rain with a spooky shadow man disappearing from view.

Four beautiful boarding school students lounging on a picnic blanket. Lucy, Authur, Quincey, and Joe.

Renfield dressed as a nun reaches for and eats a fly watching him.

What I’ve been reading recently. Stand outs this week are "Skip & Loafer 8", which made me tear up, and "The First Night With the Duke" V 1-3, a really fun read that made me laugh out loud.

8 manga & comic books laid out on a table. Mizuno & Chayama, Monthly in the Garden with My Landlord, Skil & Loafer 8, Tokyo Babylon , The First Night with the Duke 1-3, The Villainess Who Has Been Killed 108 Times.

Canzine yesterday was funnnn! Thank you for coming out. I was incredibly tired from sleep deprivation and overwork, but still had a great time seeing a bunch of familiar faces.

I tried out one of those super easy entry grade, snap it together with your hands kits. Sooooo cute.

What I’ve been reading recently. I was eagerly waiting for “Glitch” by Shima Shinya since I’m a fan of their previous work “Lost Lad London”. “Tamon’s B-Side” by Yuki Shiwasu was also a real fun & lighthearted read for idol fans.

Every time a new Blue Lock volume comes out I'm like "Agh, again? Alright, fine." Yet I keep reading, and here we are at volume 21... It's different from the usual sports manga I enjoy because they push the "selfishness" & "egoist" aspects of soccer, rather than "uplifting teamwork."

Cover of volume 21 of Blue Lock, featuring a soccer plaer with pink hair running

I really love how motion is shown in "Wandance". The dancers feel so lively and dynamic, and you can really feel the author's love for dance come through. Wandance Vol. 6

Slow burn grand fantasy political intrigue shoujo manga set in vague fantasy Asia?! A princess who fights for herself and her people... Really good binge read.
