If basic human rights are predicated on whether someone committed crimes (see the "except as punishment for a crime" clause in the Thirteenth Amendment), then you create perverse incentives for those in power to create as many "criminals" out of the opposition as possible. Prisoners are humans.

Fortunately, literacy in the English language is not sufficient to understand that sentence. Unfortunately, I'm chronically online enough to understand it anyways.

It's astounding that even the retiring GOP senators can't bring themselves to criticize the president... but it seems like most of the ones staying in politics can't even bring themselves to say the czar has bad boyars!

He didn't do much AS president but he was a slaveholder and was instrumental in stealing land from native peoples as both a governor and as a military officer.

It's important background on why interwar Japan was Like That, on the specifics of warship design during the prewar arms race, and on the dynamics of the Tsarist government's last decade... unless you're doing a deep dive on one of those three topics, yeah... a name check is all it merits.

I think there is an argument to be made that it was both at least in part. Killing brown children in the global south was clearly ONE of the goals of DOGE, but I think it's very plausible these guys are so high on their own supply they really believed they could save money by axing public servants.

And I just realized they put "support for Ukraine" and "free trade" on the pro/anti-immigrant axis which is... real weird.

omnomtom @omnomtom.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Also I don't *disagree* with their axes of sorting, but the way they define "Hawkish Nationalism" is WEIRD. They include "border security and crime" and "build the wall" which fit MUCH better with the "immigration and openness" category. Then they treat siding with Palestinians as isolationism.

Look at that distribution. A whole bunch of the test takers are well right of the Republican party when it comes to racial grievance and acceptance of immigrants. That's... fucking terrifying. Hitler particles off the charts.
The breakdown by the "Race and Gender Grievance," "Immigration and Openness," and "Hawkish Nationalism" axes. Shows (D), (I), (R), and test takers distributions overlaid. Test Takers show very few respondents in the centre on the first 2 axes, with spikes on either end.

I found the "people who took this test" graph in the by axis breakdown interesting. Almost all of them are bimodal at the extremes with only a few respondents in the centre. It seems like it's circulating in some very reactionary circles as well as here.

Like I'm absolutely giving the article the side eye but it's not making fun of people's identities, it's calling them out for their behaviour. Bullying people out of sharing or discussing the article is just more of the same high control behaviour it's pointing out!

I don't get what the people complaining about it *want.* Yeah, the motives behind the writers might have been to go "look at these freaks in <marginalized community> bullying each other!" But like... it happened! It wasn't good! Preventing people from discussing it doesn't make it better!

The president not being on TV announcing new tariffs or attacking the fed might have something to do with the numbers fluctuating less week by week. It probably is just less frequent polling, but there are also real reasons for Trump's numbers to be a lot more volatile over time.

"Parents Rights" is often a line of attack on trans kids, but in a state that's banned GAC for minors even with parental consent, it's a pro-trans message! And Talarico said he only supports sports restrictions that protect safety and fairness. Texas' rules forced a trans guy to wrestle girls!

I also saw people yelling about Lindsay James (IA House) for her ad that talked about keeping Washington out of your family's choices. But I'll point out that at least in the case of the statements by her and by Talarico, they're PRO trans rights statements that are being called transphobic.

Out of hundreds of Ds running, she's found about 20 who she'll call out, and her bar is extremely low. The dems are not, in fact, anti-trans, apart from a few running in ruby red districts. Like the Ohio lady's ad was monstrous, but calling Becerra or Talarico or the party anti-trans is unhinged.

One of Canada's advantages is that we know a lot about the US. We follow their news and politics, get their TV channels, travel there. But Americans know nothing about us. They don't understand our politics, history or values. They constantly misjudge us, but we understand them completely. #cdnpoli

Even if the fear of the democrats deciding throwing trans people under the bus is the winning move outweighs the material consequences of who sits in the senate for the next 6 years, you should STILL want Talarico to win! His opponent has made "Talarico is pro-trans" the center of his campaign!

100%. What you say in a hostile interview on Fox and what you say in your paid campaign ads are massively different contexts, and someone with a long record of protecting trans kids using weasel words and hedging on sports is massively different from "I'll keep trans ideology out of schools"
010
omnomtom @omnomtom.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
His opponent is making it his #1 issue! Saying in a hostile interview that he's opposed to trans women playing in sports if it impacts fairness or safety (a loophole you could drive a truck through) isn't going to outweigh that! But it might convince some Fox viewers that his position isn't radical.

omnomtom @omnomtom.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
THIS is actually my biggest objection. If Talarico wins, the lesson the party takes isn't going to be "moderating on trans issues is good, actually." It's going to be "defending trans people is a winning stance, even in Texas!" because his record of pro trans votes and rhetoric is extensive.

Yeah, the 49-48 election is not a strong mandate. But the point holds that Americans elected this guy twice, and without major structural reform, we can never again trust that agreements we negotiate with them in good faith won't be unilaterally torn up by a would be mad king 4 years later.

Now I don't which of those worlds we live in, but I don't have the sheer unmitigated hubris to believe that I MUST be right about it, act in a way that's damaging if I'm wrong and barely productive if I'm not, and condemn anyone who does otherwise.

If it doesn't matter either way, your approach slightly increases the amount of justice in the world by making the bastards suffer. If it DOES matter and trans rights AREN'T a lost cause, you're making things worse for all of us. If there's even the slightest possibility, your strategy is wrong.
110
omnomtom @omnomtom.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Does causing the bastards damage improve the material conditions of present or future trans people? It might be emotionally satisfying, but if it is counterproductive to advancing the rights and welfare of trans people, I think moderates' frustration with the nihilist radicals is pretty justified!

Is it more likely that Talarico has been misleading voters for six years by his truly exemplary voting record on trans rights or that he was dissembling for 30 seconds once with a clear goal of misleading the sort of voters who watch Fox News Who can say

1.) I strongly believe Dems should hold the line on trans rights 2.) I believe we should call out any of them who actually sell us out 3.) The fact Actual Literal Trans Woman Sarah McBride gets accused of plotting trans genocide daily makes the accusations people make on here lack credibility

The best part of being an artist is that you can just draw whatever dumb idea comes to your head at 1am
A scene parodying the Neon Genesis Evangelion scene of Asuka and her Eva unit getting pierced by the spear of longinus. In this scene, Linguini and Remy from Pixar's Ratatouille take the place of the EVA unit and Asuka respectively. Linguinis eye is pierced by a fork version of the spear and Remy is depicted in an inset where he is grabbing his eye and screaming like the anime. There are anime subtitles at the bottom that say "AHHHHHHHHH!"
