Transparency is not accountability, and my @commoncause.org colleague Preston Mitchum draws the line between them better than anyone I have read this year. People are not cynical because misconduct is hidden. They are cynical because it is tolerated. open.substack.com/pub/ourcommo...

1/ We filed in the Supreme Court today. The government wants to screen every voter against federal databases it has already conceded are incomplete, 60 days before the election. We asked the Court not to let that start while the case is still being decided.

I keep seeing people frame litigation and organizing as competing strategies. I think Georgia just showed why that’s wrong. The map that wasn’t drawn may be the real story.

What actually happened in Trump v. IRS and Floyd v. DOJ — and why we're still in court. Read more at my Substack: open.substack.com/pub/omarcomm...

One lesson from this case: outcomes are not inevitable. After months of litigation, a federal court blocked the Trump-Vance administration’s attempt to move nearly $1.8 billion in taxpayer funds through its so-called anti-weaponization fund. That’s an important win, but we’re continuing the fight.

Quoted in The @us.theguardian.com today. California’s election isn’t the story. The story is that we’re watching a familiar pattern unfold again: claims of fraud without evidence, attacks on election administration, and efforts to undermine confidence in results before counting is complete.

President Trump has officially nominated Todd Blanche to be Attorney General. The Attorney General’s job is to serve the public interest, not the President’s personal interests. That’s why Common Cause developed a public interest test for Attorney General nominees. Todd Blanche failed that test.

Filed late Friday night. @commoncause.org appealed Florida’s new congressional map because Florida voters already banned partisan gerrymandering in their state constitution. Politicians are not supposed to rig voting maps to keep themselves in power.

An uplifting day with my former boss, Assistant AG for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke, and 200+ alumni of DOJ’s Civil Rights Division taking stock of what’s happened to this once “crown jewel” of the Justice Dept and imagining what civil rights enforcement must become next.

Spoke with @jenrubin.bsky.social from @contrariannews.org about the work we’re doing at @commoncause.org related to the Minnesota tragedies, DHS/ICE and DOJ lawlessness, and the need for accountability—from individual agents to cabinet secretaries.

Let’s be honest about the tradeoffs. Health care is being cut while Congress pours unprecedented funding into federal law enforcement operating with impunity. Our tax dollars aren’t caring for parents or veterans. They’re funding lawlessness.

At the same time, the Attorney General is demanding sensitive voter data in exchange for federal law-enforcement de-escalation. That isn’t governance. It’s coercion backed by guns.

Quick gut check: Why should voting come with a privacy tradeoff? This summer, the DOJ asked Massachusetts for its non-public voter file. Full names. Home addresses. Dates of birth. Driver’s license numbers. Partial Social Security numbers. That’s not routine. That’s sensitive.

I’ve been lucky to work closely with Bob over the past 10 months, including a week together in Winston-Salem during our racial gerrymandering trial. His clarity, steadiness, and deep belief in people leave a mark.

Last night, Bob was honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor North Carolina bestows. Our staff also announced seed funding for a scholarship to carry the HBCU program forward.

One of those fellows, Marcus, joined the program over 15 years ago. Recently, he stood in court representing Common Cause as one of our lawyers. That’s Bob’s legacy in a nutshell.

But Bob didn’t just win cases or pass reforms. He built people. More than 20 years ago, he launched our HBCU Democracy Fellows program, training hundreds of young leaders who are now shaping the movement.

Bob started Common Cause NC as a one-person shop and grew it into a 15-person powerhouse fighting every day for fair representation, voting rights, and a truly multiracial, pluralistic democracy in North Carolina.

Last night we celebrated a true giant of the democracy movement. After 25 years as @commoncause.org North Carolina State Director, Bob Phillips is retiring. What he built over those years is nothing short of extraordinary.

The American people deserve a president and administration focused on improving lives—not turning government communications into a campaign megaphone. It’s time to overhaul our ethics systems and rebuild trust in public service.

@commoncause.org just filed 54 ethics complaints across multiple agencies to expose how fragmented and outdated our oversight systems are. One coordinated abuse required 54 filings. That’s not accountability—that’s dysfunction.

This morning, I joined @wtopnews.bsky.social to talk about something that doesn’t get nearly enough attention: how broken our federal ethics and accountability systems have become. When government officials use taxpayer resources for partisan messaging, it’s not just unethical—it’s dangerous.

💬 The principle is simple: your bank account shouldn’t decide your ballot power. Curious—what’s one change you’d make tomorrow to reduce money’s grip on politics?

SCOTUS is hearing a case that could blow open the floodgates for big money in politics. We filed an amicus brief with @commoncause.org, @campaignlegal.org & LWV to say: coordinated spending limits matter. Without them, elections risk becoming auctions.
