It is a truth universally acknowledged that there is a certain 'je ne sais quoi' oh so very special about a firm, young carrot.

A “sharpener” always puts me in mind of the sequence immortalised by Bernard Ingham in his account of Sir Dennis Thatcher’s hydration regime…
As Margaret Thatcher's press secretary, Bernard Ingham, once recalled, Denis had many terms for his favourite tipple: "An opener, a brightener, a lifter, a tincture, a large gin and tonic without the tonic, a snifter, a snort, a snorter. And a snorterino, which more or less empties the bottle in one go."

Love this idea! A propos of nothing… “farouche”
The Merriam Webster definition of the word “farouche”

In French, farouche can mean "wild" or "shy," just as it does in English. It is an alteration of the Old French word forasche, which derives via Late Latin forasticus ("living outside") from Latin foras, meaning "outdoors." In its earliest English uses, in the middle of the 18th century, farouche was used to describe someone who was awkward in social situations, perhaps as one who has lived apart from groups of people. The word can also mean "disorderly," as in "farouche ruffians out to cause trouble."

Which in turn reminds me of the scene Boswell describes in his “Life of Samuel Johnson”
"After we came out of the church, we stood talking for some time together of Bishop Berkeley's ingenious sophistry to prove the non-existence of matter, and that every thing in the universe is merely ideal. I observed, that though we are satisfied his doctrine is not true, it is impossible to refute it. I never shall forget the alacrity with which Johnson answered, striking his foot with mighty force against a large stone, till he rebounded from it, 'I refute it thus."

Look, I get it: it’s tempting to avoid providing any evidence to support your baseless claims, but you didn’t even try. Some might call that telling. Given that the article makes it very plain that Khan is talking about the right, I have to ask… did you even read it? 😬
Rupert Lowe, a rightwing independent British MP, said this month of London: "Outside a few select
posh areas right in the middle of the city, it increasingly resembles the third world."
Khan said the rightwing attacks presented a picture of London totally at odds with reality, and that the city was attracting US citizens in record numbers since Trump's re-election in November 2024.

Oliver Turner @oliverturner.cloud · 27/12/2025
Uhh… it’s a perfectly accurate summary of what he said? Your claim of “framing” and “setting an agenda” requires the FT to have misrepresented the substance of what Khan said. Feel free to provide examples of this happening.
"You are seeing politicians and commentators in the UK, Europe and across the globe attacking London," he said. "They are often populists, nativists and unilateralists.
"I can see that they are worried about London's success. That's because we are a diverse,
progressive, liberal and multicultural city that's incredibly successful. We're the antithesis of all the stuff they talk about."

I expect it’s because, without strict Same Origin Policy, a malicious site that you visited could potentially access your session cookie on nordcraft.com by making a request for the VTT resource portswigger.net/web-security...
Why is the same-origin policy necessary?
When a browser sends an HTTP request from one origin to another, any cookies, including authentication session cookies, relevant to the other domain are also
sent as part of the request. This means that the response will be generated within the user's session, and include any relevant data that is specific to the user. Without the same-origin policy, if you visited a malicious website, it would be able to read your emails from GMail, private messages from Facebook, etc.

Betteridge’s Law strikes again en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betteri...
Betteridge's law of headlines

Talk
Betteridge's law of headlines is an adage that states:
"Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." It is based on the assumption that if the publishers were confident that the answer was yes, they would have presented it as an assertion; by presenting it as a question, they are not accountable for whether it is correct or not.
