"The Supreme Court is betting on America's amnesia"

OPINION STUART C. LORD | MAY 6, 2026

The U.S. Supreme Court's latest voting rights ruling is dangerous not only for what it does legally, but for what it reveals nationally. It reveals how much historical amnesia now exists in the American bloodstream.

A nation that still viscerally remembered Selma, literacy tests, courthouse registrars turning Black citizens away, poll taxes and the humiliation of being told that citizenship did not entitle you to political power would not treat the dismantling of voting protections as a sterile legal adjustment. It would recognize it for what it is: Democratic regression wrapped in judicial language.New York Times / The Opinion Pages

EDITORIAL

"North Carolina's Voting Restrictions Struck Down as Racist"

By THE EDITORIAL BOARD

JULY 29. 2016

By Hanna Barczyk

The scurrilous attempt by North Carolina Republicans to suppress the rising power of black voters was struck down on Friday by a federal appeals court that concluded that the state's voting strictures "target African- Americans with almost surgical precision."

The decision means that the voting power of black citizens in the important swing state will not be hobbled in November by a repressive 2013 law that the court found was steeped in blatant racism, in violation of the Constitution. "Because of race, the Legislature enacted one of the largest restrictions of the franchise in modern North Carolina history," the court ruled.

The court, in finding that the law was designed as a deliberate tool to reduce the African-American vote, is the latest to beat back attempts by Republican statehouses to interfere with minority and new voters.

We don't need 100% of America to be angered and activated by this, anywhere around 3 to 5% would be enough. Think we can find roughly 10 million people or more to get pissed off over this?
Fortune article headline: Scott Bessent has 'got a feeling' that $175 billion raised under the IEEPA is lost to the American people for goodApproximately 47.9 million people in the U.S. lived in food-insecure households in 2024, representing about 1 in 7 households (13.7%) struggling to afford adequate food. This includes roughly 14.1 million children. Additionally, about 5.4% of households (7.2 million) experienced "very low food security," where food intake was reduced and normal eating patterns disrupted.Approximately 22.6 million renter households, or 50% of all renters, were cost-burdened in 2023, meaning they spent more than 30% of their income on rent and utilities. This marks a record high for the third consecutive year, driven by rapid rent increases and stagnant income growth. "ICE officers to attend Super Bowl after Bad Bunny announcement, says Lewandowski

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will attend the 2026 Super Bowl, where Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny is set to headline the halftime show, according to Corey Lewandowski, an adviser at the Department of Homeland Security.

There is nowhere that you can provide safe haven to people in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else,” Lewandowski said Wednesday on “The Benny Show.”Last month, Bad Bunny told i-D Magazine that he is not performing in the U.S. during his forthcoming world tour due to, in part, concerns over ICE raids at his concerts.

“But there was the issue of — like, f‑‑‑ing ICE could be outside [my concerts]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about,” the artist told the magazine.

"A president who orders his officials not to comply w/ court orders would be creating a constitutional crisis." Or a president who allows his officials to ignore court orders is getting the same result.
It's not the first time Vance has floated defying court orders. During a 2021 interview on the podcast Jack Murphy Live as a Senate candidate, Vance said he would advise Trump to "fire every single midlevel bureaucrat, every civil servant in the administrative state, replace them with our people." He added: "When the courts stop you, stand before the country, like Andrew Jackson did, and say, 'The chief justice has made his ruling. Now let him enforce it.'"

Vance defended his comments in a 2022 exchange with NBC News.Greene pointed out that others in Trump's orbit, including Musk, have floated ignoring court orders.

On Saturday, Musk reposted a post on X from a user who wrote, "I don’t like the precedent it sets when you defy a judicial ruling, but I’m just wondering what other options are these judges leaving us."

"What is the significance of this quote from In the Time of the Butterflies?
"Maybe because I was used to the Good Shepherd and Trujillo side by side in the old house, I caught myself praying a little greeting as I walked by."
Quick answer:

This quote highlights Patria's internal conflict and the pervasive influence of Trujillo's regime. Growing up with Trujillo's portrait next to Jesus' in her home, Patria equates the dictator's presence with religious reverence. Her involuntary prayer signifies how deeply Trujillo's authority is ingrained in her psyche. Despite her disdain, Patria prays to Trujillo out of desperation, reflecting her ingrained religious habits and illustrating the oppressive power of his dictatorship."

The committee believed the Justice Department was unhelpful in its investigation.
Initially, after it was revealed in 2021 that Mr. Gaetz was under federal investigation, the Justice Department told the panel to stand down as it completed its inquiry — a request the committee complied with.
In 2023, Mr. Gaetz announced that the department had decided not to charge him, leading the committee to restart its inquiry.
But, at that point, the Justice Department refused to respond to the committee, according to the committee.
The committee said that “after three months without a response despite repeated follow up,” it filed Freedom of Information Act requests with Justice Department offices, “which to date have not been adequately processed.”
“The committee continued to reach out to D.O.J. throughout 2023, having still not received a substantive response to its request for information,” the committee said.
The committee said it received its first correspondence from the Justice Department in January 2024.
“At that time, D.O.J. provided no substantive response or explanation for its delay,” the report said.
But the department told the committee it does not give nonpublic information about investigations that do not result in anyone being charged.
The committee said this stance by the Justice Department is “inconsistent with D.O.J.’s historical conduct with respect to the Committee and its unique role in upholding the integrity of the House.”
“D.O.J.’s initial deferral request and subsequent lack of cooperation with the committee’s review caused significant delays in the investigation,” the report said.
