Potato and Nut Salad
For Dressing
5 tablespoonfuls melted Crisco
1 teaspoonful mustard
1 teaspoonful salt
2 teaspoonfuls sugar
2 yolks of eggs
3/4 cupful cream or milk
1/4 cupful vinegar
For Salad
3 cupfuls sliced cold potatoes
1 cupful broken hickory nut
meats
1 teaspoonful chopped onion
Chopped parsley
Cold cooked sliced beets
Sliced lemon
Lettuce Leaves
For dressing. Mix sugar, salt, and mustard, add Crisco and stir
thoroughly; then add yolks of eggs well beaten, cream, and lastly vinegar.
Cook in double boiler until consistency of cream. If milk is used instead
of cream, add 1 teaspoonful flour to other dry ingredients.
For salad. Mix potatoes, nuts, and onion together, and place on
crisp lettuce leaves; pour over dressing and garnish to taste with beets,
lemon, and parsley.

*Black Bean Soup—2 cups black beans,
3 tablespoons Crisco, 1 onion, 1
lemon, 2 quarts stock or water, 2
stalks celery, 2 hard-cooked eggs, 114
tablespoons flour, 3 cloves, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, red pepper, and mustard to taste.
Wash beans and soak over night; in
morning drain, cover with boiling
water and boil 30 minutes; drain,
throwing away water. Slice onion,
dice celery, and cook 5 minutes in half
of Crisco in soup pot; add beans,
stock or water, and cloves. Simmer
until beans are soft, add more water
as stock or water boils away. Rub
through sieve, add remaining Crisco
and flour rubbed together, then heat
to boiling point, add seasonings. Cut
lemon in thin slices, removing seeds,
and cut eggs in thin slices. Put them
into a hot soup tureen, and strain
soup over them.

which have been peeled after cooking
in boiling salted water, beat into
this 1 tablespoon whipped cream,
1/2 tablespoon Crisco, 1/4 teaspoon
salt, 2 egg yolks, 1 tablespoon sugar,
1 teaspoon sherry wine. Cool and
fold in beaten egg whites, form
into small balls, dip in beaten egg,
toss in crumbs and fry in hot Crisco.
Drain and serve.

breadcrumbs, 1 cupful flour, 1 cupful
brown sugar, 1/2 cupful Crisco, 1 teaspoonful salt, 2 teaspoonfuls baking
powder, 1 teaspoonful mixed spices,
3 eggs, 1 cupful milk, 1/2 cupful seeded
raisins, 1/2 cupful chopped candied
citron peel, 1 cupful currants, 1/2 cupful chopped preserved ginger, 1/4 cupful brandy, 1/2 cupful chopped English
walnut meats. Mix flour with breadcrumbs, add Crisco, sugar, salt, baking
powder, spices, nuts, fruit, milk, eggs
well beaten, and brandy. Pour into
Criscoed mold, cover with greased
paper and steam steadily for four
hours. Turn out and serve with liquid
or hard sauce. The brandy may be
omitted.

CHRISTMAS SALAD
Drain the required number of slices of canned Hawaiian pineapple from the syrup
in can. Arrange them on individual plates and cut in mangles and leave in their
original shape. Cut narrow pointed petals from pimientos and arrange 5 of them
above each slice of pineapple, radiating from center and not quite meeting. Sur-
round pineapple with small heart lettuce leaves standing upright. Set a small rose
of mayonnatse in center of each poinsettia and pipe a small frill around pineapple.
Serve very cold with Christmas dinner.

Orange and Tomato Salad
3 tablespoonfuls melted Crisco 1 tablespoonful chopped parsley
4 tomatoes Tarragon vinegar
4 oranges Salt
Peel oranges and tomatoes, and slice and arrange alternately in salad
bowl. Mix juice squeezed from ‘‘tops and bottoms” of oranges with an
equal quantity of tarragon vinegar, add Crisco and salt to taste. Pour
over fruit and sprinkle chopped parsley on top

A peanut doll dressed in blue and white crepe paper in Puritan costume, holding a few heads of wheat, makes an appro- / priate and dainty Thanksgiving favor.

Decorate the table with autumn leaves. Corn, husked and tied together, is most effective, suspended here and there from the walls and between the doors, As Thanksgiving is the one day of the year when all America gives praise for prosperity and freedom, an unusually well-filled board is not only in good taste, but is expected.

To make a unique Thanksgiving dessert, cut a small pumpkin across the top. Carefully scoop out the inside. Place on a dish and fill with Floating Island; replace the pumpkin top. Garnish the platter with generous sprigs of autumn leaves, and on these lay a variety of sliced cakes.

Plenty of turkeys, cheap, seen by Commissioner of Markets
Turkeys are to be plentiful and cheap for Thanksgiving, says Markets Commissioner Edwin J O'malley. Retail prices should be in the neighborhood of 60 cents a pound for the best birds and as low as 45 cents for cold storage turkeys. The Commissioner bases this estimate on the wholesale price of 40 cents a pound for the best live turkeys. Commissioner O'malley issues this optimistic statement despite the fact that this year's supply of turkeys is less than last year's due to the warm weather and the drought in Texas. Up to now, turkeys had been bringing a high price in the local market because of warm weather. But it is expected that Virginia and the other southern states, where New York gets most of her turkeys, will ship a large enough supply between now and next Wednesday to warrant a considerable slump in price.

BAKED BEAN SANDWICH.
Press one-half cup cold baked beans through a Sieve, add one
tablespoon tomato catsup, one-half teaspoon made mustard,
and a few drops of onion juice. Place between slices of brown

CELERY SANDWICHES
Mix one cup of tender celery stalks, one-quarter cup each of
English walnuts and olives chopped fine; moisten with mayon-
naise dressing and spread between slices of brown bread cut

The menu includes the "Canal Special" meal of clam chowder, lobster, potatoes, vegetables, and a dessert. It also includes specials, luncheon specials, and dinners. Inside the menu is a card that reads: "Special To-day, Martini Cocktail 35 cents."

Activated by a spring-loaded plunger and trigger mechanism, it crushed ice cubes and “shot” the ice spray out through the rubber gasket, to the delight of guests. This gadget connected the new cocktail culture that took hold after the repeal of Prohibition (which outlawed the sale of alcohol in the United State between 1920 and 1933) with popular science and interest in space travel. The product brochure says the shaved ice can also fill the “ice bag, ” presumably to hold against your aching head after too many cocktails.

Banana Cream.
Scald one pint of milk. add two well-
beaten eggs, two cupfuls of sugar and,
when cooked until smooth. one tea-
spoonful of vanilla. Add one pint of
cream and partly freeze, then stir in
one pint of banana pulp, the juice of
two oranges and one-half of a lemon.
Serve in glasses garnished with ba-
nana balls dipped in lemon juice and
rolled in powdered sugar.
