Swapped my 4 x 4 pickup for a small van as too expensive to run. Was useful though as I'm a farmer. I'll manage though (until winter snow and ice lol)!

Mostly committing rather than scary, except the last part. A long moment of doubt watching the guide traverse away under the overhangs, so there was no going back (or up or down) from there anyway. But he knows my capabilities well enough now, and it was fine (but very exciting!).

Why governments keep failing youtu.be/F3mcah3KPno?... Why have we failed to tackle climate change and so much else when we knew what had to be done? Could it be that vested interests are comfortable with the way things are, despite the consequences for most people and the planet?

I remember finding it fairly frequently on road verges (motorways/trunk roads) when I was surveying 20 or so years ago.

It doesn't change my anti-monarchy position in general, but that starting point, the lack of detail in The Guardian article, and a few other things may have led me to an overly jaundiced view of the management of The Crown Estate.

I stand corrected. Thank you for this. (I have had a quick look at the Annual Report, something I clearly should have done sooner).

Your 12% figure roughly corresponds with the article, but not the "rest goes to the Treasury" bit.

John Moore @oldmutter.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
How did we get to the point that the King owns the sea bed? £1.2bn profit from Crown Estate land, of which 40% goes to the Treasury. What happens to the remaining 60%. Nearly a third of that 40% goes back to the King for "official duties". It's a fucking scandal.

Do you think they were actually nectaring? I'm currently doing some work on Cheq Skip nectar use. AFAIK Dandelion is not previously recorded, Red Clover is, White Clover rarely, Bistort in Belgium only. Blue/Pink/Purple flowers seem preferred.

John Moore @oldmutter.bsky.social · 07/06/2026
Nectaring on Bistort might be quite an interesting observation for Chequered Skipper in Scotland.

Chequered Skipper - Britain’s Favourite Butterfly
The Chequered Skipper is a conservation success story in the UK. But, is it going to be Britain's favourite butterfly?

I think we might have been in some trouble with our Chequered Skipper studies if their life cycle stages overlapped. Thinking about the limestone grassland sites in France/Belgium.

This the former Wain Common labelled as Waun on the old 1840s map. No longer common land and now with ghost enclosure field boundaries. Designated Open Country and still nice habitat although heavily trampled by cattle in winter. You can see Redgate towards bottom left of old map.

1000t + walking draglines have always been electric fed by a cable. I guess they move around a lot less than these excavators, although some have been walked quite a few miles.

I was very disappointed that the string players in my amateur orchestra gave up masking as fast as they could. Not much woodwind and brass could do except separate and ventilate. As a flute player I had to give up doing something I loved.

Apparently there is a national need for more chicken meat. At least that's what Shrops CC claimed when approving one near Clun. Also "no other suitable site for the development" was taken to mean the applicant had nowhere else to build it.
