As some of you may know, I am a huge Agents of SHIELD fan (best thing Marvel ever did, and it wasn't even Marvel that did it!). Now, here are rumblings that characterss from AoS are returning in the new series Zodiac. Cool! Provided (a) it's well written and (b) they don't just kill them off :-S

Remember that writing a book, publishing a scholarly article or playing music are now not only "good things" generally (provided you're good at what you do) – they are now acts of resistance.

We have: * MegaCorp-owned machines trying to take over the faculties of human thinking * A giant computer network ruled by said MegaCorps influencing our every action * Corporate neo-fascism * Livestreamed execution It's cyberpunk, but worse. No cool aesthetic neon lights and pretty Shinjuku rain.

"Best practice" is one of the silliest phrases in the English language. "Top dollar" is a close second.

Out and about now, so cannot check for examples, but pretty certain they are solid.

In borrowings, yes, iirc there are several examples of this (due to the apicality of Eg. /r/).

6th century (Kofun era) Japanese stone warrior. It's from the Iwatoyama Tumulus, the largest burial of its kind in northern Kyushu - possibly the burial of Tsukushi no Kuni Iwai, a powerful local leader and the head of a rebellion. Now at the Tokyo National Museum. #archaeology #japan #kofun
Stone figure with a face surrounded by long locks and a belt at the waist. The shape of the body is very stylized.

Ancient Egyptian word of the day: jwn, ("color"). Historically pronounced [jawin] or [ʔawin]. Cognate of Semitic words such as Arabic lawn-, "color'.

Btw, reading a bit of the Wnjs pyramid texts right now, with Allen's grammar. That shit is weird. But weird good. But still weird.

And yeah, the Coptic vocalizations are weird (and yep, did look at them). Must admit I followed the general consensus vocalization of the word. Doing otherwise would, I think, be perilous (at least in this context!).

Realize I misspelt an Arabic word. Now removed, but honestly not going to restart the thread :-)

Man hör i dessa dagar inte sällan att "vi" fått en "ny bibelöversättning". Rent förutom alla problem i användandet av "vi" här, vill jag lite försynt påpeka att det som givits ut är en nyöversättning av Nya testamentet. Inte "Bibeln".

Phoenician word of the day: Khnt ("priestess"). Pictured: Claudine-Thérèse WIllermoz, Madame Provensal. One of the few female members of the Élus Coëns (does that make her a "Coënne"? :-) ), who rose all the way to the degree of Réau-Croix.
Painting of Madame Provensal – origin unknown to me.

You can love stuff and spend your life on it without constantly screaming about it being perfect. Try it. Scholars doing classical humanities want nothing more than people studying ancient literature. Believe me.

Ola Wikander @olawikander.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
It's just like the scholarly analysis of video games in a way: it's done *because* the stuff is so important. Not because the scholar somehow hates it.
150
Ola Wikander @olawikander.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
We don't always agree with the stuff we're studying - far from it - but we are well aware of its importance. We don't have to convince ourselves that ancient literature is good. We know that.

A Homer scholar *knows* that the Homeric epics are great. Believe me.

Ola Wikander @olawikander.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
If you're worrying that humanities scholars are "attacking" the Classics, biblical lit. etc, rather than "learning from them": understand that we live with these texts. We love them. They are second nature to us. That means: we don't have to say "they're so great" constantly.

Finally received peer reviews on an article of mine, that I submitted in April of 2025 (!). Generally positive, but they want a few revisions. But seems quite doable, so that'll be coming out!

Why are the central characters in modern language textbooks and readers so often sports fanatics? It's always basketball this and baseball that and tennis here and football there. Isn't it possible that they are, you know, misjudging parts of their readership and user base here?

So many believe this type of rote learning is (a) boring and (b) impossible. Showing both of these presuppositions wrong is actually quite exhilarating.
