Population didn't grow dramatically over that period because birthrate is low. Here's the graph.

A Sainsbury's car park sign warning you to "Stay in your car. Please do not approach the van...". With my bicycle in the foreground.

Or maybe: "American institutions have proven more *irrelevant* than those of other countries undergoing similar stress."

The Leibreich piece is interesting, much better than the Fawcet. Most of it isn't really controversial. But I don't see the evidence presented for their conviction that nothing campaigners do can have positive impact. None of this for example happens automatically or in a political vacuum:
A screen grab of text from the Leibreich piece:

"A decade ago, coal provided 39% of US power. Last year it was 15%. In the European Union, coal was at 26%, and last year it was 10%. The UK was 42% dependent on coal in 2012 and last year closed its final power station. In China, coal was at 73% of power ten years ago, in the first quarter of 2025 it was 58%. China may still be building new power stations, but it is also shutting old ones and using the ones it has less and less."

I once complained to a council about routine two wheel parking on the pavement and in a few months they came around and put these signs up too legalise it.

This seems to be the pathetic appeasement solution increasingly adopted by councils: tarmac the pavement too.

Most of Barnet is like this. So depressing. Why do we need yellow lines etc when parking on pavement is already illegal? Because traffic wardens can't do anything about pavement parking?

Simon, should we not perhaps be a bit wary of repeating the worst parts of 20th century history? What if it breaking things turned out actually to be much"worse than doing nothing".
