Yasmin watches with axe at side as torso expands beyond recent confines, jaw works open, closed, ceaseless pulse of finger slows to stop. Then turns away, stows axe, straightens shirt seams, returns to what is more ship than one ought manage on one’s own, now borne two.

Fenrir Cerebellion @okaywolf.ink · 06/08/2026

She takes an axe to it some dozen more days in. Cuts a long vertical crack in the tall vertical body. Pulls out a body with fingertip raw. Pale without light or pale from the deep, starved, asphyxiated.

In light of day, in air salt and chill biting breeze, she eyes the whole of the spar above deck. Takes her time. Makes audience for meals, lingers not when moving to action but in mind. Yasmin thinks of nothing but the tapping of the mizzenmast spar.

A shroud climb to crosstrees, her ear pressed against wood spar, Yasmin heard it. Crouched on keelson in the deepest dark, her ear pressed against wood spar, Yasmin heard it.

Up the mizzen, down to mast step. The tapping sound—soft and small and steady and, after weeks, singled out from the norm of ship upon water with force of wind—was from the whole of it.

A friend made an air filter with an old standing fan, taped up cardboard into a tightly fitting box with a circular hole for the fan and a cutout for the base to stick through You can make one with what you've got (f you've got) if you can't find or afford a box fan

As someone who grew up in an annual wild fire area, if you’re broke buy a filter and duck tape it to your box fan and it should give you some reprieve at home. Also helps with pet allergies tbh Link to different versions to make👇🏽 cleanaircrew.org/box-fan-filt...

what is the City of Vancouver's position?

“Tsleil-Waututh has a sacred stewardship obligation, a responsibility to care for our lands, air and waters,” Chief Justin George says in the statement.

“While we attempted to resolve these outstanding issues in good faith, our concerns were ignored, leaving us no choice but to go to court to protect our territory and interests.”

I wrote a whole novella about not being able to go home full-time to that small mountain town because I'm so allergic to the smoke that hangs over the whole region all summer, by extrapolating that out to what if it was actually lost to fire And every year I watch to see whether or not it is

110

Fenrir Cerebellion @okaywolf.ink · 09/07/2026

Five years ago I was watching videos of how close the fires were getting to Kelowna proper, already consuming land and homes on the outskirts. The fires are this bad and worse every year now. They've wiped out so many towns, so much nature already. So much has been lost already

Whole mountainside of black needle thin remains of pine and fir, spruce and birch, brush and berry, every nurse log, every flora that would support fauna, bare and removed from the ecosystem

Fenrir Cerebellion @okaywolf.ink · 09/07/2026

I come, in part, from a small mountain town. When I was barely double digits, we had to evacuate due to a fire on the backside of the hills, which I got to see the result of every time we drove through there for years upon years afterwards until the flooding the other year knocked out that road

110

Fenrir Cerebellion @okaywolf.ink · 09/07/2026

Just thinking about how there are clear and evident causes of the wildfires and that no tangible action is being taken at the scale required to eliminate their effects and we just watch more and more burn every year

130

Fenrir Cerebellion @okaywolf.ink · 09/07/2026

I went to pull an example from Sometimes the Mountain Buries You but the title itself comes from a passage about not being able to return home (the emotional driving force behind You, the main character), which also includes a mention of a whole other experience that also makes my heart ache, so

Fenrir Cerebellion @okaywolf.ink · 09/07/2026

Mostly on the reread and mostly when the core concept I'm expressing or the core experience I am translating into fiction does so, so well that it reaches back to that original thing in my heart and grips in fist to squeeze between fingers
