with all due respect the ff11 raid is the worst about this imo. the story could have not happened at all and it would literally change nothing about our understanding of 14's world and characters. it is so profoundly pointless that the main antagonist is the only unvoiced character in the third raid

the shadowbringers trial series is the best example here given that it's literally also from ff7, but the difference is that it's not "LOOK IT'S FF7," it's just using ideas from ff7 to tell its own story that feels far more natural than these really corny Crossovers(tm) like ff11 and eva

when the eden raids chose to be ff8 themed, they didn't go "LOOK IT'S SQUALL FF8 LOOK" it was just about a thing that was also in ff8. eden in ff14 was its own unique take on the concept, and it had its own specific place in ff14's world despite being a callback as well

that said nier is really bad about this, but nier was fun to play so it didn't matter. that could apply here too, if the eva and ff7 content is enjoyable to play then i won't mind, but these kinds of crossovers do nothing for ff14's unique world and lore and it kinda blows

i say this as someone who's favourite alliance raid series is nier, but the game was a lot more fun to read as a vast world with its own unique history when the ff callbacks were more subdued and purposeful and not "LOOK IT'S CLOUD AND SEPHIROTH PLEASE CLAP"
