The horrific failed and botched execution attempt in Tennessee last night lays bare the cruelty of the death penalty. Christa Pike's attorneys challenged the state's ability to safely execute her, to no avail. She remains hospitalized. We must end the death penalty. #christapike #deathpenalty

Portland Police Chief Bob Day says he's lost confidence in Councilor Mitch Green. That comes after a blogger dug up tweets that Green made before joining City Council. We need to keep the focus on the bigger questions about policing and accountability in Portland. @inafutureage.bsky.social
The focus should be on the violence and harm that PPB inflicted on Portlanders during 2020-21 and the lack of meaningful accountability for what officers did. The widespread use of tear gas and use of force during that period was not simply the product of choices made by a few individuals; it reflected a culture within PPB that has never been adequately addressed. Juan Chavez, Director, Civil Rights Project, OJRCIt is also worth asking why there has been little transparency in hiring Portland's police chief in recent years. Since before the pandemic, the City has not conducted an open, public process for selecting its police chief. Instead, PPB leadership has effectively selected its own successors. Portlanders have a right to more scrutiny of these hiring decisions. We are concerned that Chief Day using the City's resources to support the silencing and demotion of a city councilor may violate ORS 260.432(2).

Elected officials have a duty to closely examine police practices and policies on behalf of the public. Providing oversight is fundamental to our democracy. We encourage all those with the power to shape the future of policing in Portland to focus on accountability and meaningful improvement."
