Well well
In April, Jonathan was caught up in a viral crypto death scam when a message from a fake X account posing as Hollis claimed the tortoise had died. The news spread around the world before the Guardian made contact with Nigel Phillips, the governor of Saint Helena, who interrupted his bedtime routine to check on Jonathan. He found him asleep under a tree but “very much alive”.

Jonathan certainly appears to be enjoying life. A few months ago, he was found mating with Emma, who shares his paddock. Shortly afterwards, the wife of the governor, who is also called Emma, checked on Jonathan and found him upside down. “Emma [the tortoise] has a very semicircular shell,” said Hollis. “So if you slip sideways fast enough the momentum will flip you right over. It’s phenomenal though. He’s 194. You’re going to have an accident, aren’t you, at 194?”

A photo of the cover of Zack Davidson’s book titled “KAIBYŌ: The Supernatural Cats of Japan”. The cover features a scary looking cat in a haunting standing position, showing its fangs and creepy looking claws, along with a few other smaller animals occluded by the book’s title horizontally typeset on the lower half of the cover, together with the Japanese vertical text 怪猫 in red text against a black circle. I don't think we are talking loudly enough about this. Staring this November 2026, there will be a 1 HOUR TIME DIFFERENCE between: * The Greater Vancouver BC area, and * Point Roberts, WA - in the dark red box below. The thick gray line right north of Point Roberts, WA, is the US-Canada border.
Screenshot from openstreetmap.org, showing the area around the boundary between British Columbia, Canada, and Washington, USA. Just south of the Tsawwassen ferry terminal is an area known as Point Roberts, and that is on the US side. There is no boat service nor airport at this peninsula, so residents of Point Roberts, WA, have to enter Canada to go shopping, to travel anywhere.

If I am not mistaken, it's the only spot in Tokyo where you can see trainlines with 1500V DC OCS lines near a trainline with 600V DC 3rd rail with a cut-and-cover construction method. The Toden Arakawa Line is also 600V DC but it's doesn't go through a cut-and-cover subway tunnel, so yeah
A screenshot of openrailwaymap.org at Hijiribashi near the Ochanomizu station in Tokyo, showing the electrification details. The pink line going from northwest to southeast is the Toei Marunouchi Line, running on 600V DC 3rd rail. The cyan lines going east-west are the JR Chuo and JR Sobu lines, running on 1.5KV DC OCS. The other cyan line going north-south is the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, which stops a bit further south at Shin-Ochanomizu station.

U.S. Climate Alliance
Due to the lack of action on the federal level, states are stepping in to push the phasedown agenda. The U.S. Climate Alliance is a group of 24 states and Puerto Rico that pledged to implement policies that advance the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement after the U.S. withdrew. The Climate Alliance represents 55 per cent of the U.S. population and an $11.7 trillion economy and several of these states have included HFC regulations as part of their climate plans. California, Washington and Vermont have already adopted phasedown plans based on the proposed SNAP rules while Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and New York are in various stages of adopting regulatory programs.

California
Unsurprisingly, California is setting the pace for the Climate Alliance states in its aggressive regulations of HFC refrigerants. The California Air Resources Board, or CARB, is a state agency charged with developing the regulations and it is guided by California’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from HFCs by 40 per cent by 2030 compared to a 2013 baseline. Thus, California is writing HFC phasedown rules that go beyond those laid out in SNAP rules 20 and 21 and put it on a pace 5 to 10 years ahead of the Kigali phasedown schedule:

A ban on air conditioning systems (excluding chillers) using refrigerant with GWP greater than 750 GWP by 2023.
A ban on chillers (comfort and process) using refrigerant with GWP greater than 750 by 2024.
A ban on new commercial refrigeration systems with a charge greater than 50 pounds using refrigerant with GWP greater than 150 GWP by 2022.
A ban on servicing existing equipment with refrigerant with a GWP greater than 1,500 GWP by 2022. (This keeps in place the updated Rule 608 that the EPA is currently reviewing). (A potential exemption for reclaimed refrigerant and R-410A remains an option.

This is more like what I was looking for: neurolaunch.com/psychology-o... Sociometric popularity is just sociometric popularity. But we usually conflate with other metrics like high status, attractiveness, etc. That’s all on us, but it’s another set of social metrics that get arbitrarily linked.
Key Takeaways:
• Psychologists distinguish between being genuinely liked (sociometric popularity) and being seen as high-status or dominant (perceived popularity), and the two often diverge sharply.
• Physical attractiveness, social skill, and even aggression can all boost perceived status, but only warmth and cooperation reliably predict being liked.
• Popularity that relies on dominance or relational aggression tends to become a liability in adult relationships and workplaces.
• Social media has added a new, quantifiable layer to status-seeking that appears to affect mental health differently than in-person popularity does.

🔑: “Yet FDR’s central lesson still holds: there is no way to fight off the fascist threat without combating the true material crises that make it harder for people to resist strongmen and scapegoats.” Also the screenshot below is too good to hide behind a paywall. This ought to be THE way.
People are already pushing for these kinds of solutions. We can see it in the rapidly expanding movement demanding democratic governance over AI, and winning freezes on data centre construction until it is in place; in the global campaigns to tax billionaires, and even impose a cap on wealth; and in the historic number of US politicians voting to stop arming Israel, and opposing the widening conflagration in Iran. It’s there, too, in the renewed focus on climate action coming from insurgent Democratic Party candidates who support a Green New Deal, alongside Medicare for All.

There is a long way to go before we have responses on the scale of the crises we face, but a growing number of ordinary people and political leaders understand something simple and urgent: that the best way to help their neighbours resist the allure of end times fascism is to make their lives better in the here and now.

I haven’t looked but I would imagine a geopolitical thriller novel was written based on this story as an intro!
In a matter of minutes, Japan acquired four problems: the exposure of serious vulnerabilities in its defenses, an armed Soviet officer seeking passage to the United States, one of Moscow’s most secret military aircraft sitting at a commercial airport and an angry superpower demanding the immediate return of both.

From www.thecollector.com/how-kalining...
In December 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed, and many of its constituent republics became independent states. This was also true for Belarus and the Baltic States. Since Kaliningrad had been part of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic, it remained part of Russia as an exclave, separated from the Russian mainland. Traveling from one to the other requires transit across two countries.

Given Germany’s history and the fact that Kaliningrad is populated by a vast majority of Russians, Germany does not intend to promote any claims on the territory.

According to an article published in Der Spiegel in 2010, in 1990, Russia offered Kaliningrad back to West Germany, but the West Germans did not accept the offer.

The label is basically the same in all other languages. I do understand Google Maps differentiates labels by the user's geolocation, which I have permitted. If I spoof my location, it might be different, but the fact is that the names of bodies of water are geopolitically charged, and it all depends on which point of view you are looking from.

Roles and Responsibilities
The United States is a global power and one of the world’s strongest economies. Therefore, the president has responsibilities domestically to the people living in the U.S. and internationally in shaping relationships with other countries and international organizations. The president’s actions can affect people’s daily lives and individual freedoms as well as the common good of the nation and its international reputation.

The president wields both formal and informal powers that help them to carry out their duties as head of state and head of the government. As the only elected official who represents everyone in the U.S., the president is expected to be a unifying leader for the whole nation — not just for their political party or supporters. The president should, therefore, exemplify the highest leadership qualities and honor the values of democracy.

16-2/3Hz, 16.7Hz, 25Hz, 50Hz, and 60Hz. It's really fascinating. I find it interesting that AC frequencies change mid-span in some sections simply because the overhead catenary lines were electrified at different times in the course of history. e.g just east of NYC Penn Station, in Queens:
Screenshot from openrailwaymap.org, showing electrification details of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor just east of NYC Penn Station. As you go north on this stretch of rail, there is a segment of rail that runs on 12kV 25Hz (light yellow), then 0V! (pink), followed by 12.5kV 60Hz (darker yellow). You have to read into this article to leave behind the attention grabbing headline. But in this day and age in which the internet + social media has destroyed our ability to have meaningful conversations, this is a movement that might be necessary, and I wish more would share at least in spirit.
Besides, even more so than during the AOL years, international communication can now be mediated by technology, translated instantaneously via app and aided by the ascendancy of English as a de facto lingua franca. But for Esperantists, none of this comes close to solving the fundamental problem of human disconnection. “If our aim is only to buy a hamburger, then [those tools] are enough,” Petro Baláž, a prominent Slovakian Esperanto publisher and educator, told me. “But it’s something totally different … to speak about the meaning of life, to travel through the world, to have really deep conversations.”

That’s why individualism and collectivism are on opposite ends of one of the scales. I suppose the people who speak up loudly don’t want to get along, but feel threatened enough to speak up, and when they do, their fears compel them to speak combatively. Just a pre-validated hypothesis.
Individualism

Individualism is the extent to which people feel independent, as opposed to being interdependent as members of larger wholes.

Individualism does not mean egoism. It means that individual choices and decisions are expected. Collectivism does not mean closeness. It means that one "knows one's place" in life, which is determined socially. With a metaphor from physics, people in an individualistic society are more like atoms flying around in a gas while those in collectivist societies are more like atoms fixed in a crystal.

Just looked this up on the map. Granville between Georgia and Helmcken includes the intersection with Robson. I just took this screenshot minutes ago, showing the street is closed to car traffic. Yeah, this should just be permanent, IMO. Well done, Vancouver!!!
A satellite view of Google Maps shows showing the car access closure on Granville Street in Dow town Vancouver BC, between Georgia Street and Helmcken Street.

I learned about John Rawls in a grad school finance course taught by a strongly Progressive professor. When I learned about his Principles of Justice as Fairness, I believed it was rather difficult argue against it, especially the Difference Principle, hence this question: bsky.app/profile/ohmo...
4.3 The Two Principles of Justice as Fairness

These guiding ideas of justice as fairness are given institutional form by its two principles of justice:

    First Principle: Each person has the same indefeasible claim to a fully adequate scheme of equal basic liberties, which scheme is compatible with the same scheme of liberties for all;

Second Principle: Social and economic inequalities are to satisfy two conditions:

        They are to be attached to offices and positions open to all under conditions of fair equality of opportunity;
They are to be to the greatest benefit of the least-advantaged members of society (the difference principle) (JF, 42–43).

Dear Uniqlo US marketing team: Please have your Japanese marketing team review any marketing emails with Japanese on it, ESPECIALLY when it's vertical text. This is kind of embarrassing. Thank you, Japanese expats in your target market (US)
A screenshot from a Uniqlo marketing email, on the top left corner of the email, featuring the red Uniqlo logs (in Japanese Katakana and in English), plus vertical text - on the right, rotated 90 degrees to the right "LIFEWEAR COLLECTION", and on the left, in Japanese vertical text, "shintempo open", except that the vowel extender line is typeset horizontally instead of vertically.

That's just wrong.

A colorful manhole cover on the streets of Tokyo just south of the Ochanomizu station near Meiji University. The manhole features a cartoon artwork of a half-bald man with a big nose against a yellow background with the copyright (c) Tezuka Productions, and the text on the manhole reads Chiyoda (ちよだ), referring to the ward where this is located.
