Local slate is plentiful so it made a good substitute. Unfortunately these plain stones often get mistaken for debris and removed from cemeteries when well meaning people try to clean them up Willow Tree Cemetery, Hant's Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador

Until the mid 1800s we didn't really have a gravestone carving industry in Newfoundland so gravestones were imported. But importing a gravestone was expensive and ordinary folk in small fishing communities like Hant's Harbour pictured above couldn't always afford that cost

Day 12: Ordinary At first glance you might not be able to tell this is a cemetery. But the stones you see were used as headstones when ordinary folk couldn't afford imported carved gravestones. They are made of local slate and often get overlooked in the burial landscape #31DaysOfGraves
Willow Tree Cemetery in Hant's Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador. There are headstones in this photo but they are the kind normally called fieldstones, made of local slate and not usually inscribed. They often get mistaken for debris and removed from cemeteries when well meaning people try to clean them up. However until the mid 1800's, carved headstones were imported to Newfoundland and Labrador as the carving industry had not yet gotten under way. It was expensive to import gravestones and ordinary folk in small fishing communities like Hant's Harbour would not always have been able to afford the cost. Local slate was plentiful and made a good substitute.

I'm picturing them below my knees but I'm still saving up so I have time to figure out the placement!

Day 11: Humourous The grumpy sun and equally grumpy moon on this stone in the Old Burying Ground, Halifax Nova Scotia always make me giggle. One day I will have them tattooed on me #31DaysOfGraves

Just finished it and overall I give it 8/10. I think if we'd gotten like a second season and could have spent more time developing the characters would have benefited the story!

I hope I see more from them though. I want more series set in Newfoundland not just using us as a stand in for small coastal America

I'm watching episode 5 now and the only thing I wish is that they'd given the show more space. 8 or 10 episodes might have been what it needed to tell the stories without feeling like they rushed some parts

My friend in Poland who only knows a Newfoundland accent through me could even tell that it was not quite right. But I'm enjoying the show anyway!

Katie Crane @ohfolkthat.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I'm going to finish the last two episodes today. The accents aren't quite right but they're better than a lot of other things filmed here so I'll give them that!

I suspect that this stone had fossils or some sort of imperfection in it. You can kind of see one in the wing of the cherub in the second photo. I imagine it didn't deter the original carver but someone at a later date was curious and cut it out to investigate!

Day 10: Missing There is a piece cut out and missing from this headstone in Bethany United Cemetery in Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador. You can see right through to the stones behind it! #31DaysOfGraves
A headstone in Bethany United Cemetery in Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador. There is a rectangle cut out of the stone near the top beneath a cherub. Day 9: Lettering One of my favourite things is when you look closely at a stone and see the guidelines carved in so the lettering in the inscription will be straight and even. And then they still ran out of room and had to put 'wife' on two lines #31DaysOfGraves
The gravestone for Jane and John Conway in Halifax, Nova Scotia's Old Burying Ground. It features a cherub at the top of the stone. The inscription reads:

Here lieth the body
Of Jane Conway
Wife of John Conway
Who departed this
Life the 6th day of
Oct, 1776, aged 56
Years. Also the body
Of John Conway

The rest of the inscription is obscured by grass. There are guidelines carved into the stone so the lettering will be straight.

Curious if any non-Newfoundlanders are watching Below on Netflix and what they think of it. I've watching 2 episodes so far but I'm trying not to blast through it. They're all trying with their accents, god love em

It's by a gravestone carvjng family that I am obsessed with. All their stones are so amazingly detailed, including the stone the sons in the family carved for their father when he died!

Day 7: Home This is one of my favourites, by an amazing local carver. Love the details of the hand especially. In Greenspond, Newfoundland and Labrador. #31DaysOfGraves
The gravestone of Stuart G Bragg who accidentally drowned in 1931. The top of the gravestone has an open book with the word home written on the left page and a hand with a quill. Underneath it is:

In loving memory
Of
Stuart G. Bragg
Accidentally drowned
May 30th. 1931
Aged 25 years.
Erected by his wife Minnie.

Lo where this silent marble weeps
Husband, son, and brother sleeps
A heart within whose sacred cell
The peaceful virtues loved to dwell

Just apart where no shadows fall
In perfect peace awaiting all,
Safe in the land that knows not pain
He is longing to meet us all again.

Despite its name, this is a multi-faith cemetery which sets it apart from most other cemeteries in St John's. There are various flavours of Protestant but also several early Chinese immigrants and an entire section for Muslim burials

Day 4: Entrance I've always loved the main gate to the General Protestant Cemetery in St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. I wish the rest of it was still around and not the concrete wall that exists today. #31DaysOfGraves

Day 3: Glass Not a lot of glass in graveyards in Newfoundland and Labrador so here's a glass jar filled with slips of paper I found on top of a mourning figure in Abney Park Cemetery, London, UK. I didn't open it because it felt private! #31DaysOfGraves

Me too! There's so few here, it's a shame this one is in poor condition. The urn fell off and it's behind slowly pushed over by the tree behind it 😞

We're nearing the end of our movie challenge and Esther and I have decided we want to do another one. So here's a sneak peek to our next challenge! I'll post our picks and the rules in October in case anyone wants to follow along.
A bloodstained background with an old school tv on top which shows a spooky black and white cemetery with skeletal trees and a 1950s-esque woman looking startled. Above the tv it says "Katie & Esther's Alphabet of Horror Movie Challenge." Below the tv it says "The haunting begins October 2026"

There is another beech nearby that has a very thick and gnarled trunk which might speak to it being one tree that presents as individuals!

Katie Crane @ohfolkthat.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I honestly don't know enough about trees to be able to answer that. I suppose either is possible. There is an old farmhouse not far from there and the trees are not native to the area, so they could have intentionally been planted that way. But it's also reasonable to think it's one system too!

Locals in Harbour Grace call this the Fairy Circle or the Fairy Ring, a group of beech trees growing in a perfect circle in an otherwise empty clearing. It was humbling to be able to stand inside the ring (and no, I wasn't taken by the fairies)

My grandmother doesn't make the date buds anymore now that she's in her 90s, so I've taken it over. But when she did make them, she only made one batch at Christmas. So this scent memory is pretty potent

I know it's supposed to be a medieval take on vanilla but it gives me such a specific nostalgic memory of baking date buds with my grandmother. The sweet sugary dates, the baking cookie crust, it's all there. I can't wait to buy a full bottle when it's back in stock!!
