Full disclosure, I've never seen an Anita Sarkeesian video. I was never interested in them. They didn't bother me.

But it does bother me how people *love* to remind the rest of us that she always said “It's both possible, and even necessary, to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of its more problematic or pernicious aspects” in all of her videos, except her videos were about how said problematic or pernicious aspects were causing real harm to innocent women in the real world, and what had to be done to put a stop to it for good.

If something is causing harm to real people in the real world, then it is not okay for it to exist, and if it is not okay for it to exist, then it is not okay to enjoy it. Exposing and denouncing the harm it is causing should be the first step to getting it removed, not an excuse to allow it to continue to go on unpunished. Continuing to enjoy something that is harming people is not only a bad reflection on your moral character, but it goes against pretty much everything that social justice is supposed to stand for.

"It's okay to like problematic things as long as you acknowledge they're problematic" is not the get-out-of-jail-free card you think it is.

I'm still not over this.

People won't shut up about how the Walmart is killing people and how everyone who shops in it is indistinguishable from a fascist, but as soon as you get sick of it and go "Well just firebomb it and guillotine all the customers and be done with it!" they start saying they can't do that because it goes against their principles and it would make them look bad.

I don't know how many of these people realize this and how many of them don't want the rest of us to. (had to post it as an image with alt text because it was too long.

We could really achieve so many things if we finally admitted that the whole "critizicing problematic media" thing is nothing more than the same kind of Catholic moral posturing that gave us "video games cause violence" or "Dragon Ball is Satanic" with a different vocabulary.

Remember that the word "problematic" itself implies a moral judgment. On its own it just means "causing problems", but those problems are understood to be the likes of offensive stereotypes, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, systemic oppression, fascism, and other clearly immoral things. To call something "problematic" is to call it immoral, and if we are to solve the problems it is causing and thus improve society, all that can be done with it from that point on is to alter it into compliance or erase it from public memory permanently.

They really like to argue against this with the phrase "it's okay to like problematic things as long as you acknowledge they're problematic", which is nonsense, since it's not okay for the problematic things to exist, and therefore neither is their enjoyment. It's a rather flimsy excuse that falls apart the second you try to apply it to any other crime, like murder, or the aforementioned racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, fascism, etc.

I've grown to groan when someone calls something a "deconstruction" because usually it isn't. It's just the first one the viewer paid attention to without scrolling their phone for 2/3rds of the run time so now it's gotta be the exception so they don't have to admit they were wrong about a genre

Related to this concept, but I also can't stand when someone actually ends up enjoying something in a genre they dismiss, so they end up claiming it's actually a "deconstruction" or "not like other things in the genre". People do this a lot with RPGs; just admit you enjoyed one for once.
