I read to my little sister all the time. To get her to read more, I'd intentionally say something outlandish that wasn't in the book. She'd say "IT DOESN'T SAY THAT!" I'd say "yes it does! Read it yourself and SEE!" Decades later, she realized my reason for doing that and playfully cussed me out.

Against my warnings, my friend took his girlfriend to see DIGGER. Rather, he dragged her to it. She hated it so much that she cussed him out in the lobby of the Bedbug 25. He hated it too, so he got in trouble for nothing. Meanwhile, the bedbugs, Nicole Kidman and I are laughing our asses off.

My mother HATED this one! "That little bastard needed his ass beat!" she said. (Mom had a list of characters who needed their "ass beat" including Veda Pierce.) As Alan mentions, I also watched TWILIGHT ZONE on WPIX as a kid/teen. It came on after THE HONEYMOONERS! I'd be scared to sleep after it.

Matt's not kidding! From my HALF OF ONE STAR review:

The first time I ever heard Nate Bargatze do stand up was during the end credits of “The Breadwinner,” the horrifically unfunny family comedy he stars in and co-wrote. His jokes alternate with outtake scenes, as if this were a paid advertisement for his stand up specials. And why not? When it’s not trying to be a poor man’s version of Michael Keaton’s far superior 1983 comedy, “Mr. Mom,” the entire film plays like a series of ads. Toyota, the Tennessee Titans, and the NBC show “Shark Tank” get the most promotional pushes.

Director Eric Appel also finds space for a shopping spree at Walmart, which Bargatze’s character, Nate, celebrates in dialogue that sounds like a commercial. Appel’s camera makes sure to center a giant bucket of KFC in the frame as well.

Product placement is not new, but “The Breadwinner” rubs your face in it. Unfortunately, the biggest product this movie is selling is the outdated notion that fathers are so incompetent that they don’t know where their own kids go to school, or how to make toast, or how to do the laundry.

When I was at TIFF, a few movie reviews were written by my colleagues. One reader wrote me asking if I'd gone to a different beat or left the paper. I assured him I was still on duty. Other people wrote HOPING that I'd quit or, even better, that I'd been killed. This is why I don't live in Boston.
