Smooth operation! We reached our deep sea mooring site in central west Nansen Basin at 84N, and managed to recover it. Hopefully we now have a two-year record of the ice and ocean conditions. And can redeploy it in couple of days to collect more data. #npolar #EBT26 #PH2050 #FFKronprinsHaakon 🧪

We are on the last part of our #EBT26 expedition, now moving across the Gakkel Ridge towards the Nansen Basin. We are back in a region with much less sea ice, and moving fast from one station to the next on our oceanographic transect. #npolar #PH2050 #FFKronprinsHaakon

Busy times in the Amundsen basin. We managed to deploy a deep sea mooring at 86.5N, equipped with many sensors and samplers to collect data over the next two years. Rapid ice drift made it challenging to deploy 4200 m of kevlar and all the instruments. Great team effort! #EBT26 #npolar #PH2050 🧪

Ice station day! Today we spend all day doing an ice station at an old thick ice floe. Collecting samples from the snow, ice and water below. 🧪🦠🔬 And get some under-ice measurements away from the ship. Poor visibility limits how far we can go. As 🐻‍❄️ might visit. #EBT26 #npolar #FFKronprinsHaakon

Yay! After some drama we also managed to get the 2nd deep mooring to the surface at 86.5N. The top floats popped up right next to the ship. Feels good to have secured a new 2 year record of the ocean and ice at this remote location in the Amundsen Basin. #Arctic #EBT26 #FFKronprinsHaakon #npolar

We reached the mooring site at 86.5N in the Amundsen basin. Found a large enough opening in the sea ice to pop up the first mooring, anchored at 4200 m depth. Always an challenge to recover a mooring in icy waters. #Arctic #EBT26 #PH2050

Sea ice acts as a lid on the ocean and is one reason why the #Arctic Ocean is extremely quiet in terms of mixing. As sea-ice and wind conditions change this may change. Here we measure turbulence from the ice at the North Pole, away from the ship to avoid interference from its thrusters. #EBT26

Photo credit Natalie Summers. The instrument measuring turbulence (mixing) below the ice is lowered to a few hundreds meters depth, and then has to be manually winched up back to the surface. Our team onboard #FFKronprinsHaakon has continued their work in the last week in the Makarov Basin, north of Baffin Island. Heavy and dense old ice has made progress slow. Operating equipment over the side of the ship is challenging. One has to be careful not to be caught by drifting ice floes.
