Attribution of changes in winds over the Southern Ocean from 1950 to 2100
Abstract. Strong near-surface westerly winds drive the Southern Ocean circulation and play a key role in setting regional and global climate. In the latter half of the 20th century, depletion of strat...

Great Q... a combination of human influences (greenhouse gases, ozone depletion) is altering the temperature gradients between the polar regions and the mid-latitudes... one impact of this is an observed strengthening of surface westerly winds (projected to continue also)

Really hard to say at this stage. A warmer ocean provides more moisture and energy for storms, but the developing El Niño could give more vertical wind shear which could hamper storms developing. Last forecast I saw was for a below-normal season... prod-01-alb-www-noaa.woc.noaa.gov/news-release...

Happy Midwinter to all Antarctic folks. A year ago today, I was at Elephant Island, where Shackleton and his men were marooned for months before the amazing journey to South Georgia and ultimate rescue. Elephant Island is just outside the Antarctic Circle, so we did see a sunrise, albeit briefly.

There were lots of seals in the water (whales too) - but I don't recall many hauled out. To be honest, much of the time there wasn't very much sea ice around, which was troubling to see in itself...
