to me, “you should create for yourself” and “you deserve to be acknowledged for what you make” are two statements that should coexist. chasing engagement will rot your soul, while being neglected will see your passion wither. loving what you make is a failsafe for when the engagement never comes.

I wallow in my lack of productivity when I don’t write, but I’ve grown weary of wallowing in my lack of engagement when I do write. “Write for yourself!” That’s well and good, and I admire those who do, but for me, it’s always been about sharing those emotions/experiences through the written word.

I miss writing. But I’m exhausted. My job is draining. Being alive is draining. I’m not ‘big’ enough for my work to matter, but I bleed myself into it—it’s not done quickly or easily. There’s effort. Emotion. It feels in vain when I consistently flop. I’ve never felt so disheartened & unmotivated.

If your discord is raving about fanfic or fanart in private, consider screenshotting (anonymise the usernames) and share that with the artist! We love that shit! And most creators don't have have inherent problems with it being discussed in private, but when we never see it it really does suck.

Fan fiction writers will craft book-length pieces with the promise of no monetary gain, all for the love of the craft and the fandom. People writing for months on end amidst their busy lives. It’s a testament to the fact that humans will create with no other incentive than for the joy creating.
