I’ve been saying for months that the AI tools used in hiring are disproportionately rejecting various competencies and aren’t actually working. There is no way that I can skills match the job at 98%, BE BILINGUAL, and have a doctorate and not even get shortlisted. But I’m disabled. #bias #killAI

I was telling Joe that for as much as they draw in ($1.8m reported from sales/memberships etc) I could do this on one FTE year round paid and put on a better con - this is embarrassing amateur work done by people who have never done a day of community engagement and it shows.

Sure did! Having been in non profits for a lot of years including having oversight on spending and being federally audited I had some QUESTIONS on their spending like how in 2023 management was paid $105k but $21k last year…. And how their IT budget ballooned from $3k in 2024 to $60k in 2025

Anything less than that is negligence on your part as an event organiser. Now if you're a director and you have that delegated to other staff - that's totally fine, you can't be 75 places at once - but you have SOMEONE THERE. To have no one there covering something like that is a BIG deal.

Also (insider trading here) having worked with Dragon Con and having helped with the launch of Atlanta Science Festival I can tell you that when you're event staff and specifically you are on load in/out - you leave when the last people are done. Your shift ends when everyone else is OUT.

Honestly this. I don’t want MORE papers, I don’t want MORE conferences to attend, and I don’t want MORE meetings scheduled. I want a quality papers. I want a few good conferences that are representative of the field and an EMAIL summary not a zoom 🙂‍↔️

I assumed they weren’t being very transparent on their taxes tbh. So finding out they probably aren’t being truthful about staffing isn’t a shock 🤣 I mean they pull $1.8million and I can tell you, looking at how it’s allocated there are some 🚩 would love to see an actual org chart!

Allegedly said they have 15 staff (not including volunteers mind you). Now if you look at their taxes they only claim to have iirc 2 paid staff so somewhere this story doesn’t wash 🤔 I was also mistaken they are a NON profit not for which is how I can see their tax returns 😅

I’ve served on multiple internal and external committees, been a funding reviewer for science organisations in the EU, published a few papers and presented my work internationally, OH and I won Colours in sports because I guess it’s not enough to be academically gifted 🏇🏻

Then I worked for NASA in Houston as an outreach and engagement coordinator before COVID axed my position and I decided to go back for my doctorate. 🙂‍↕️ while at Uni instead of JUST studying I’ve also run a massive philanthropic outreach project

I was responsible for rebranding our annual meeting, rebranding our website, rebranding our annual report, growing our network over 441% in my time there and I was our social media manager and ran all the web stuff bc we were on a TIGHT budget.

Then I went on to work 6 years at MIT in another non profit office where I managed a network of large scale science events across North America and liaised with international partners on best practice in event creation and event management.

The way they have spoken to vendors is absolutely catastrophic IMHO. And the director response being essentially “well what was I supposed to do!” Buddy you’re in charge you’re supposed to do THE MOST. Absolutely horrific I’m so angry on behalf of like every single vendor.

Oh, and trying to once again silence vendors from complaining out to the community so that the community is aware of the problems is a huge red flag and as a director not immediately owning those criticisms and trying to fix them is a MASSIVE problem that is even more unfixable. #fwa2026

There has been repeated feedback to the director about the dealer head, their inappropriate behaviour, poor decision making, and attitude towards vendors that is outright hostile. If I were in charge of an event this size and my weakest link was doing this much reputational damage

there wasn’t an inherent need for the new venue, the new venue was a consequence of poor planning. The director has effectively not done an audience evaluation and is not building a convention that meets audience need.

That’s all on the staff and director. Also, choice of venue was on the director - no one but the director and dealer head chose this new venue which by and large most of the vendors did not want. Trying to chalk up that there was a need for more vendors to cover the cost of the venue means

Let’s keep going! The director also blamed the expensive new venue for the issues arising in vendor set up and expectations but the director, dealer director, and their communications liaison failed to review policies and layout of the new venue and relay these to their vendors.

Further, the director also blamed many of the issues on having 300 vendors. Again, other vendors pointed out that having that many vendors was a choice by the director and not staffing to support that number of vendors is again a choice BY the director.
