You're thinking of the Puritans. Quakers were abolishionists in the 1700s, organizers of the Women's Rights movement in the 1800s and the Civil Rights movement, and trained the organizors of the first national pride march after Stonewall. We've struggled for centuries to bring the US forward.

They argued that, since the petition creates exemptions for religious institutions, it violates that clause. It's possible to read it that way, but if you do you create a situation where the MA Supreme Court can strike down any ballot initiative it doesn't like on religious freedom grounds. (2/3)

This system would allow the executive to operate independently of the legislature, but avoid the concentration of power in a single person, and keep a nimble executive. It would also entrench the tecnocratic aspects that are important and vulnerable in both presidential and parliamentary republics.

The governor's council can't be adapted well on the scale of the US, but the powers it has can be. Here's how I'd implement them: 1.) Have each cabinet level position be nominated by their department, and approved by the Senate. They would serve at the pleasure of that department (3/5)

2.) There is a governor's council, composed of 8 democratically elected representatives covering 8 districts. Their approval is required for all pardons and judicial nominations, as well as all allocations of funds from the treasury. New Hampshire's can also remove their governor with their AG (2/5)

Massachusetts provides a model for decentralizing the executive power of a president while keeping the seperation of powers. 1.) Several cabinet level positions are elected: Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor, and Treasurer, allowing their departments autonomy from the Govenor. (1/5)

I'm a member of DSA! There's definitely an argument between taking over the DNC or using them as a launch point for a DSA political party (that would be a delicate maneuver!). Either way, DSA is the strongest force for progressive change in the US right now, and I'm happy to be a small part of it!

Why did the majority of states decide to elect their Supreme Courts instead of Appointing their Justices? It's a useful tool to bypass gerrymandering in the present day, but it's an odd thing to be electing people who are supposed to be outside of politics!

I'm AMAB, so I had to register when I turned 18. It doesn't matter that I'm a Quaker. If they ever reinstitute the draft, I'm going to have to go up to the draft board and plead my case. I wish I could've not signed up, but you can't get any financial aid for college if you don't. It's fucked up

Whether this holds is another story, but let's think about what the costs were here. 5000+ people are dead, 20,000+ are wounded. $40+ billion in tax dollars on military costs alone, and the repressive regime in Iran is more entrenched. That's not a victory. That's a moral and strategic disaster.

So, everyone seems to be talking about the fact there's now a ceasefire in the war between the US and Israel and Iran, but look at the terms. The US agreed to lift sanctions, pay reparations, withdraw from military bases, and let Iran entich uranium. That's a stunning defeat by Trump's own metrics.

Always look at a persons actions, not who they claim to be. By any reasonable metric, Richard Nixon wasn't a Quaker. He didn't attend meeting for worship, but more importantly, he didn't live his life consistent with Quakerism. He used the fact he was born into a Quaker family to borrow credibility.

Half right. It's chromosome testing, not sex testing. Almost every sex characteristic short of chromosomes can be changed, so sex isn't actually immutable, and they're not really testing for that (or something meaningful). –A Nonbinary Quaker
