"If there’s one thing everyone ought to know about New Yorkers - we use our voice. And no one is going to take that from us." - @dlnyclu.bsky.social. The fascist-in-chief may want to get handsy with our vote. But to that we say: 💪 Hands off our democracy 💪 Hands off our vote 💪 Hands off New York

WIN: A federal court ruled in our case challenging ICE’s courthouse arrests, striking down its unlawful policy of mass immigration arrests in courthouses. This ruling - which applies nationwide - is a huge win for every noncitizen seeking to safely attend their immigration court proceedings.

New Yorkers deserve to understand how our judicial system works. Every day, judges make decisions that can dramatically impact everyday New Yorkers’ rights. Today’s ruling rightly reaffirms that we deserve a judicial system that is transparent, accountable, and responsive to the public.

Last September, 60 armed and masked federal agents descended on a factory in Cato, NY. They grabbed 100+ workers, including some U.S. citizens and green card holders, some of whom were deported without due process. We're suing Trump's DHS for this unjustified raid that violated worker's rights.

While Mayor Mamdani's policy restricting AI in schools is a good first step, there are broad exceptions that still leave students at risk. Mamdani's DOE must do more to establish AI oversight in schools that is fully responsible, robust, and protective. Our city's students deserve nothing less.

Our new report on sex ed curriculum examined 50 school districts across New York State. We gave each district an A-F grade - and nearly half of the school districts received an F, based on their coverage of essential topics, the accuracy of the info taught to students, and how biased it was.

ICE, CBP, and the county sheriffs who conspired with them on the raid in Cato, NY must be held accountable for violating New Yorkers’ constitutional rights, engaging in racist and xenophobic conduct, and harassing hardworking Central New York families. We'll see the Trump administration in court.

ICE refuses to release people from custody even when they don’t pose a safety or flight risk and in direct violation of a court-ordered settlement. We've sued ICE over its cruel no-release policy—and won—but ICE has ignored the settlement and the court's order. So we're taking them back to court.

We submitted an amicus brief arguing that the NYPD's “Suspect DNA Index” violates state law, and that the DNA people leave on discarded items can’t be seized, searched, or stored by the NYPD without a warrant. The NYPD can't be trusted to operate its lawless and invasive database in the shadows.
Photo of a NYPD police officer with short hair, black glasses, and a blue face mask sitting in an office. Text reads: "With every lost hair, licked envelope, used cup, and drifting flake of dandruff, people unavoidably and involuntarily deposit a copy of their genetic blueprint. Once those blueprints are in the NYPD's database, officers can search the ever-growing database continuously, without any oversight from courts or the state, or consent from the people whose DNA the NYPD has stored."Photo of NYPD officers in a row, in profile, saluting with white gloved hands. Text reads: "The NYPD wants us to believe that we can trust it with tens of thousands of people's highly revealing genetic information without any oversight, rules, or due process. There is nothing in the Department's checkered past that should make us comfortable allowing the NYPD to operate its lawless database in the shadows."

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers have their DNA sitting in a rogue, illegal, and unaccountable database that serves as a constant reminder of how little the NYPD cares about our privacy or due process.
Image of a strand of DNA on a black background. White title text: "Is the NYPD Illegally Storing Your DNA?"Three heads represented in green 3D modeling. Text reads: "A DNA sample can reveal sensitive medical details, ancestry, and biological relationships. It can expose whether a person is likely to develop Alzheimer's, breast cancer, or Huntington's disease. And with every passing year, technology to analyze DNA gets more advanced. There's no telling what DNA profiles will reveal about us in the future."Person with white skin placing a coffee cup on a wood table. Text reads: "For more than a decade, the NYPD has collected the genetic material of 34,000 people in its 'Suspect DNA Index.' How do they collect the DNA? Often from discarded coffee cups, soda cans, or fallen hairs. This rogue, illegal, and unaccountable database serves as a constant reminder of how little the NYPD cares about our privacy or due process."

1/ Nassau County’s Buffer Law is illegal and unnecessary. Our freedom of speech and right to assemble exist for a reason. If we lose these fundamental rights, everything else falls with them. Alongside Claudia Borecky, a plaintiff in our case, we’re continuing to fight back.
On the left side of the graphic is a black and white photograph of Claudia Borecky, the NYCLU's client and an immigrant rights advocate. Claudia has shoulder length hair and is looking into the camera. White text on a brown background on the right side of the graphic reads, "We've seen our rights taken away from us. Whether it's freedom of press, freedom of speech, freedom to assemble. The due process for every single person who lives here is ignored. I grew up in a different America, where we cherished our freedoms. We respected the Constitution and the rule of law. And I fear that my grandchildren won't live in that same America."

Nassau and Rensselaer counties are not above the law. Local officers have no business acting as ICE’s minions. That's why earlier this year, New York lawmakers rightly banned 287(g) agreements between local police and ICE. We will be watching closely to ensure local governments obey the law.

Automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) can be mounted on police cars, fixed on poles, or set on the roadside - and they record data on each and every vehicle and passenger. It's invasive + unregulated. And Flock is not the only vendor - Motorola, Rekor, Axon, and more also make ALPRs.
