Notably, Mayor Mamdani was soccer teammates with Kelly's son at Bronx Science. Kelly gave the mayor a photo of the two then-boys at a presser on McGuinness Blvd. in January. "I did not know then, what I know now, which is that Asher’s father was killed while riding a bicycle by a reckless driver."
In a touching moment, the mayor showed off a picture, handed to him by Mary Beth Kelly, of himself with her son years ago. Mamdani said he was not aware that his friend’s father had been killed by a driver.

None of the cyclists killed last week were on streets with bike lanes. One of the victims was killed when a driver ran her over from behind while she was stopped at a red light. Advocating against bike infrastructure is advocating for more cyclist deaths on our roads.
Tweet from NYC Common Sense sharing the NYT article about 3 Cyclists Dying:

This shows why more bike lanes are not the answer. Holding those who fail to follow the law - either e-bike riders, traditional riders, or drivers - accountable and ensuring that the streets are safe for everyone.

That is the answer.

A report from the Dept. of Transportation shows that city drivers who receive at least two moving violations tickets per year are 40 times more likely to cause a crash that results in death or serious injury than drivers who never receive a moving violation. Officer Giovansanti is off their chart.
Chart showing relative kill/serious injury crash risk by number of violations (top four tickets)

Drivers who have an average of 1 violation per year are 1x as likely to get into a serious crash. For 2.5 violations per year (avg), that multiplier goes to 285x as likely.

And the "AVs are safer" argument is shakier than people in the industry want you to believe...
The safety argument is shakier than it looks

The industry’s foundational claim — that humans cause 94 percent of crashes — has long been debunked. National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy herself called that claim “not accurate” and “often mis-cited” — and it’s so widely misused that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration removed it from its own materials. But the claim lingers in the national mind because it sounds right and it absolves Big Car from culpability.

But even setting aside the flawed claim that human error causes virtually all crashes, the data meant to replace it can’t be trusted either; Waymo has declined to share any findings from its city testing with the public, and we argue we still do not have enough information to make decisions on safety.

The result is a data environment that is not just incomplete, but actively contradictory: Bloomberg Intelligence reported that Tesla is 10 times safer than Waymo, while recent reporting has found Tesla’s robotaxi performing four times worse than human drivers in Austin. Waymo says its studies show that its vehicles are at least 80 percent safer than the average driver, but a close look at the source reveals that all 10 authors work for Waymo! We are being asked to reshape New York City’s streets based on something we may not fully understand or trust just yet. Any future permit must require independent data disclosure as a baseline condition.

We already have a system that’s 95 percent safer than conventional cars: Transit! If AVs pull riders off the subway and into robotaxis, the safety math goes in the wrong direction. Switching passengers from cars to AVs may save lives, but taking them from transit will cost lives.

Existing robotaxi operations run under very specific conditions: good weather, well-defined roads, low density, few pedestrians and cyclists. New York City defies nearly every one — the industry’s safety record in Phoenix tells us very little about what will happen here.

A driverless car traveled without issue down Broadway through heavy traffic. The demonstration ended when it crashed into a vehicle full of photographers documenting the event. It was 1925. A century later, Waymo’s eight AVs quietly stopped testing on those same streets 🧵

Streetsblog New York City is hiring a law enforcement reporter! More details: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Location: New York City
Salary: $70,000-$75,000 annual salary plus benefits
Date Posted: 2/6/26
Application Due:	3/6/26

StreetsblogNYC, a Polk Award-winning news outlet covering the movement for better transit, street safety and livable communities, is hiring a reporter to cover law enforcement.

We are seeking an experienced journalist to cover NYPD and the larger law enforcement community’s systemic failure to address traffic safety in the broadest possible sense: how multiple agencies fail to hold reckless drivers accountable; how law enforcement could be playing a more constructive role in protecting the most vulnerable road users; and how, of course, law enforcement routinely flouts traffic laws that the rest of us have to follow.

In short, why is the NYPD, and the law enforcement community at large, so bad at Vision Zero?

The reporter will work approximately two days or more per week out of NYPD headquarters, where they will be expected to build sources within and around the police department and the city’s various district attorneys.

Minimum qualifications
3 years of experience as a working reporter.
NYPD sources.
A proactive approach to journalism and the ability to quickly pivot to breaking news as needed.
A high level of organization and ability to juggle multiple assignments and interviews.
Enjoyment at working in a fast-paced environment.
A knowledge of what Streetsblog does and why it does it.
A strong knowledge of issues relevant to sustainable transportation.
An even stronger understanding of how law enforcement works (or doesn’t) in New York City and beyond.
Lots of ideas!

We live in a rapidly changing journalistic environment. The ideal candidate can use data to both find stories in otherwise innocuous data bases, but also to create interactive components to our stories. But we also rely on traditional shoe-leather reporting, so the ideal candidate has existing sources and knows how to develop more
