This week, we put out two benches at bus stops in the neighborhood. A place to sit should be the bare minimum for a bus stop, and yet it often costs the city thousands of dollars and months of paperwork to put in a bench.

Even if you're not familiar with duplexes (a.k.a. "two flats") - if you live in Chicago, you’ve definitely seen them! These buildings are all over town. They’re super popular because they blend so well with the existing neighborhood fabric.

Riley was riding on the S3200 block of Halsted Street when he was hit by a driver opening their door and fell into the road, where he was hit and killed by a truck. Had there been a protected bicycle lane, like the one shown below, Riley would have fallen onto the sidewalk. He would be alive today.
A parking-protected bike lane, where the bike lane is placed between parked cars and the sidewalk, rather than adjacent to fast-moving car traffic.

Thanks to help from @betterstreetschicago.org, we have some awesome palm cards to help spread the good word about: - WHY the project is happening - WHAT the project involves The changes coming to Grand will make it safer for everyone!
Grand Ave is unsafe.

Studies show that the majority of drivers speed - many in excess of 70mph. Crossings are poorly marked and wide, putting pedestrians at risk of being hit.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

The city has proposed to install safety features to protect pedestrians and cyclists, make boarding easier for bus riders, and slow drivers down.

Your leaders need to hear from you. Sending an email takes 60 seconds. Use our tools to urge them to support making Grand Ave safer!

There’s a new transit-oriented development that could be coming to the 32nd Ward at 1704 N Milwaukee Avenue - but we need your help to make sure it happens! Keep reading to find out how you can help 🏘️
On behalf of the Northwest Neighborhood Alliance, we strongly support the housing development in the 32nd Ward at 1704 N Milwaukee Avenue as currently proposed, with 12 residential parking spaces, ground floor retail, and 60 residential units.

Furthermore, we are glad to see that 20% of the units will be designated as affordable, and we believe that the additional apartments will help to provide downward pressure on rents for the whole neighborhood.Planning professionals agree that the only solution to car traffic is providing viable alternatives to driving.

Transit-Oriented Development projects like this one boost transit and bicycle ridership, support local businesses, and increase Chicago’s tax base without generating excessive car traffic. This development is within walking distance of the Blue Line, as well as multiple buses, the Milwaukee Avenue protected bicycle corridor, the 606 trail, and dozens of businesses and amenities, including a grocery store and the library.

People who live in this building will have more opportunity to live car-light lifestyles than almost anywhere else in the entire city.

This kind of development brings foot traffic, not car traffic. It is exactly what our neighborhoods need. Here’s how you can help:

1) If you live in the 32nd Ward, please call or email Alderman Waguespack to let him know you support this development.

Phone: 773-248-1330
Email: info@ward32.org

2) Sign up to give public comment in favor of the development if/when it makes it to the Zoning Committee to ensure it passes:

Tomorrow! Show up for two new housing developments in the 32nd Ward, just off of Milwaukee Avenue between Leavitt and Oakley! Meeting is at Pulaski Elementary School (2230 W McLean Avenue) at 6pm on Thursday, February 19th.
Housing alert! Support these two housing developments near Milwaukee Avenue, one of the most vibrant and pedestrian-friendly corridors in Chicago. The first is at 1801 N Winnebago, currently a parking lot, which could become 30 residential units. The second is at 1820 N Winnebago, currently a vacant lot, which could also become 30 residential units. Both are minutes away from the blue line, the Bloomingdale Trail, and both the 56 and 49 buses.Meeting is at 6pm on February 19th, at Pulaski Elementary School (2230 W McLean Avenue).
This is a screenshot of Alderman Waguespack’s newsletter, reiterating the same info as in the other two pictures, along with the makeup of the units and parking spaces.

Make no mistake: the “Save Grand Ave Parking” petition is not about “saving” anyone. It’s about putting cars over people. And while their proposal is deeply unserious, it also poses a real threat to the project. It only takes a few dozen angry voices to stall a project.

Who studied parking utilization, you might ask? Why, CDOT themselves, of course! It was part of the initial study in 2023. This is the reason that parking east of Ashland is remaining in place.

Two #GrandAve business owners have started a campaign to “save Grand Ave’s parking” - even though parking utilization is below 50%, and parking is only planned to be removed on one side of the street. It seems they’re trying to get signatures for a petition against upcoming safety improvements.
