My email to my local TD this morning opposing the proposed change to timeline for gaining #Irish #citizenship. I encourage everyone to do the same. To those with much bigger social media presence than me, please consider boosting.

giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/... Why this philosopher turned down Anthropic
Instead of thinking about AI itself, we should be thinking about its effects. It concentrates power; it obfuscates accountability; it further despoils nature and climate; it is a means of the wholesale expropriation of cultures, languages and lands for massive profit; and it will probably make us lonelier and stupider.

Tokens for Chinese AI models are around 20% of the cost of their US competitors. All things being equal and assuming Chinese models will be “good enough” for various applications, this has to weight on the upcoming IPO valuations of Anthropic and OpenAI.

While the general point of the article re: AI slop imagery is valid, choosing an authentic image of an actoricity and the headline “A photo of Iran’s bombed schoolgirl graveyard went around the world. Was it real, or AI?” is an appalling decision by The Guardian. (1/4)

Most EU governments hate immigration but it’s looking like demographics are going to force them to change their stance. One would hope they won’t want to have policies that promote declining living standards. (Then again, Brexit.)

Column resizing in Finder rendered useless as element covered by the horizontal scrollbar. How did this UI make it into Apple production?
Arrows pointing to where the column resizing function in Finder is rendered useless because the resizing elements are covered by the Finder's horizontal scrollbar.

Add Capgemini to the list of ICE helpers. (Via FT)
Paragraph from FT: Capgemini's US subsidiary Capgemini Government Solutions (CGS) signed a second contract with ICE in December for "skip tracing services" — used to locate people for legal processes — in which private investigators help the agency locate immigrants it seeks to deport.
The company also agreed to modify an older contract for "data analysis" services, adding skip tracing work starting in October.

Students could use gAI for summary generation *after* (not before) they complete their own & then compare with the AI summary. Discussion will show that summation (or abstract dev) is a very skilled human *practice*, with an implicit perspective. It should also show up weakness in AI outputs.

Arriving into Dublin Airport to see a recruitment advertisement for social care workers. These are the very people whose families the new Irish immigration policy seeks to tear apart. Not to mention the cruel irony of using photos of kids as promo.

In Untitled (Buffalos) (1988-89), David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992) framed a portion of a diorama depicting a traditional Native American hunting method as an allegory of the decade as he was dying of AIDS. #WorldAIDSDay. Credit: The Art Institute of Chicago (www.artic.edu/artworks/238...)
Untitled (Buffalos) depicts a diorama from the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., of a traditional Native American hunting method in which plains bison were herded toward cliffs, forcing them to plunge to their death. Interdisciplinary artist David Wojnarowicz selectively framed a portion of the display in black and white as an allegory of the decade as he was dying of AIDS. At once analogy and piercing critique, the image embodies the tragedy of the pandemic and offers an indictment of a nation at odds with itself.

This is a hell of a statement on the massive cost of #AI infrastructure from JPMorgan. For comparison, the entire German economy is ~$5tn, which is about 1/5 of the entire Euro economy. on.ft.com/3JwN1pw

This headline beggars belief… until you read the HSE response: “… the waiting time has now been reduced to 10 years”. These are not timelines that any well funded health service should be working with.

Good to read #TaylorSerrano2
The undercard fight between Katie Taylor and the defeated Amanda Serrano was the most watched women's sporting event in US history,
Netflix said.
In short, the evening was a knockout success in terms of eyeballs.
