With Neuvillette free from his prison, his power unbridled, Fontaine was to disappear beneath the waves. To drown in his ancient rage and be destroyed within hours to atone for the sins of the man that had caged him, condemning the nation to be reduced to rubble at the bottom of the sea just like its predecessor.

Dread knotted into a bitter lump in his throat, Wriothesley gave the pertinent orders to be prepared for the deluge.

The broken end of Wriothesley’s thread floats around his shoulder.

No one ever speaks of the threads. They are ubiquitous and ubiquitously ignored. There is no research on them, though that is not one of the Akademiya’s six sins. Humanity, quite bafflingly, has simply chosen to pretend the strings do not exist.

Neuvillette has attended weddings between soulmates, necessary as a head of state, and sat in silent wonder when the connected individuals spoke no vows about that connection. Since that first day in Fontaine, he has heard parents warn their children off chasing their threads, but never in plain words. No, their censure has always been roundabout.

Bringing up the threads at all is a heinous breach of social protocol.

Summary:

Born in the Kingdom of Remuria, and long since cast to the jurisdiction of Meropide, Wriothesley had always thought the legend of the prince held captive by a dragon in the Palais Mermonia was mere fantasy. However, when King Remus calls upon him to rescue and return that very prince, Wriothesley finds himself swiftly face-to-face with the dragon of legend. And yet, what he finds is not nearly so beastly as he'd expected. Perhaps it's Remuria who is wrong.

After bidding Clorinde farewell, Wriothesley took the lift down to the deepest part of the Fortress. Jurieu and Lourvine were there, testing the state of the capsule and doing some maintenance work; they kept wincing, however, every time Neuvillette’s tail slammed against the glass.

“You should’ve got used to it by now,” Wriothesley snorted, despite being only marginally better than Jurieu at keeping his flinches to himself. “You come down here every day.”

“Yes, but Monsieur Neuvillette usually doesn’t try to escape unless we speak or get too close,” Lourvine replied.

Wriothesley paused.

Once upon a time, the guts of the Fortress of Meropide held a secret that, were it to be let out, could destroy the entirety of Fontaine overnight.

The gates to the Primordial Sea, the maddened Dragon Sovereign of Water. In the grand scheme of things, it was of little consequence. Wriothesley had a duty to protect his people and the overworld from both.

$Though the years came and went and the moons cycled, the Palais remained ever unchanging. High walls of white rose along cliffs of sharp slate. Blue tiles lined steep rooves like the scales of a great serpent, wrapping up along spires and ramparts woven through with gold railings lying in wait to strike trespassers. Stained glass dripped from every window, refracting down in broken shards of navy and aqua, teal and azure. Every depiction told a story. A woman on her throne. A scepter. The snarling head of a dragon with its mouth open to display a forest of jagged teeth. An Oceanid goddess who looked down on her subjects with one round eye. Her arms opened wide in welcome, in scrutiny. Expressionless, a darkened sky beckoned above her. Not even her followers chose to depict her with love. At night, the entire building seemed to glow. Built of stark polished marble, it took every shred of moonlight and threw it back, casting itself in a perfect reflection across the ocean waters. A claim to the depths it touched. No resident of Fontaine itself dared approach the Palais. Not desperate scrappers or valiant heroes. Despite the legend, they all said, it was better to pretend as though that very castle never existed. To even acknowledge it was destined only to bring terrible misfortune. The most anyone talked about was the prince. The man imprisoned within the walls of the Palais and held captive by the dragon until either the beast was slain, or eternity came to a close.$
