And now Wriothesley’s on a sandy beach in a sheltered cove, and there’s someone nearby, shuddering and whimpering.

Wriothesley pushes himself up, sitting on the sand. Long, silvery hair spills down a naked back, curved and bowed. Shimmering rhinophores extend from his head, and long, glittering fins from the length of his tail.

“You saved me,” he surmises, his voice rasping, his lungs aching. He climbs to his knees and then shuffles forward, not trusting himself on his feet, and he rests his hand on the scorching hot skin of the merman’s shoulder.

The man cries out, rolling to his back. Violet eyes open in the prettiest face Wriothesley has ever seen. Bowed lips, a sharp nose, high cheekbones. Patrician and beautiful and flushed from face to collarbone. Those violet eyes are wild and glazed. Something is clearly wrong.

“Tell me how I can help you,” Wriothesley says. “You saved my life. Let me return the favor.”

When Mydei wakes up at entry hour, it’s to thirty texts and ten missed calls, all from Phainon. Bleary eyed, he stares at his teleslate for a long moment before setting it face down on his nightstand once more. He groans into his pillow, lies there for another long moment, and then blindly reaches for his teleslate. A few taps later, he presses it to his ear.

“Mydei,” Phainon’s voice says, somehow managing to slur the consonants. “Mydei you… you wouldn’t—woah. Woah. Everything is—is—” A raucous round of laughter drowns out Phainon’s voice. He’s at a bar. Or, rather, he was.

This is so annoying.

“Mydei,” Phainon says again. “You wouldn’t be… belieeeve—” He stretches the word out like it’s some kind of competition. “Cipher just—Cipher just told me the craziest—it’s so—it’s really, um. It’s crazy. I’m—I’m—” The message stops.

Mydei pulls his teleslate from his ear to stare at it and the thirty-second long message. It’s not the first time Cipher has dragged Phainon to an ouzeri to get him blackout drunk.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do,” he says, staring blankly at the floor between them. “What am I—Castorice, he has Khaslana’s heart.”

She makes a soft, wounded sound. “I know,” she says, and nothing else, but he doesn’t need her to say anything more, not yet. There’s nothing to be said, anyway.

Phainon has Khaslana’s heart, and Mydei can’t figure out how to feel about it. Here, at last, this thing has ripped open the old wound of Khaslana’s passing, letting it bleed freely, and he’s not sure how to staunch it this time. Is worried he might not be able to.

“Does knowing change anything?” Castorice asks, so softly, so kindly, as though she knows how fragile he is. Maybe she does. “Knowing that Phainon has Khaslana’s heart?”

He is known.

Described by touch, painted by the calloused tips of fingers worn down by hard work and the labor of tinkering over sheet metal and gears, he is chained to his body and freed from it, made more by the burgeoning heat within him. He, a creature of water, of Hydro, defined by fire and flame and the conflagration of his body, of bones made into kindling.

Cool water slips down his cheeks; droplets rattle the windows and patter against the exterior walls.

They’re watching some terrible Christmas movie—something about a big city journalist returning to her small town for the holidays—because Phainon is addicted to them, but Mydei isn’t paying much attention. His fingers brush over the bottom edge of that scar that runs down Phainon’s chest. He frowns.

“I almost died,” Phainon says abruptly, reaching for the remote and pausing the movie. “I—sorry. That was… sorry. I’m just… bad at talking about it.”

Mydei tips his head back, looking up at Phainon as Phainon looks down at him, their noses brushing. “What happened?”

“I was born,” Phainon replies with a dry, unpleasant laugh. He leans his head back against the couch, closing his eyes and looping his arm around Mydei’s hip, drawing him closer. Exhaling heavily, he continues. “I was born with a heart defect, a bad valve. It was okay when I was younger, but became problematic as I got older. Medication managed everything for a while, but it got worse and worse, to the point where the whole thing had to go.”

Phainon’s apartment is a torturous ten-minute walk from his studio. Beneath his shirt and jacket, the rope harness rubs over Mydei’s chest and ribs. It squeezes when he breathes too deep, a phantom embrace, and the pressure of its bindings keep him on a strange edge. Though the distant haze from the studio fades on the street, his desire doesn’t. Phainon makes sure of it. As they walk, he’s free with his hands, touching the small of Mydei’s back, brushing their knuckles together, curving his palm around Mydei’s elbow to guide him around this corner or across that street. When they pause at intersections, Phainon leans over to murmur in Mydei’s ear. Nothing crass, nothing erotic, just promises that they’re almost at his apartment and that Mydei is doing so very good.

It’s enough to have Mydei crawling out of his skin.

By the time the elevator doors in Phainon’s building open, Mydei is so hard he hurts, and his underwear is sticking uncomfortably to his cock. He wants to tear off his own clothes, wants—
