What makes it great is that there’s nothing innocent about the kid. He’s grown up in a hateful environment and it’s his air. But he does start to see how miserable everyone is after the “party”, and there’s at least the hint that he’s starting to question the point of it.

For absolutely no reason dealing with current events, I felt compelled to reread “A Party Down at the Square”, an absolutely vicious Ralph Ellison short story about a white kid attending a public lynching. I read it in a community college lit class and it burned my brain.
