It’s more and more difficult to argue for alternative theories to they are just that dumb
Sources told Reuters that one of the things Anthropic is looking at is to make
Claude control robots to carry out scientific experiments. Kauderer-Abrams clarified, however, that the company is "in the very early innings of using Al to automate the execution of lab work" and that human oversight remains essential for safety, at least for now. He also said that Anthropic has yet to run any clinical trial.
As Reuters notes, though, Anthropic still has to deal with a trust problem from the public, like other Al companies today.

That’s a perfect PR answer. Because many (maybe all?) LLM voice models tend to switch language when they encounter a single word in a different language. And no one has ever considered that to be a helpful feature.
Michelle Waldron, publicist for Particle 6, the Al production company behind Norwood, told Forbes in an email the incident was "not a malfunction; it clearly shows what she's capable of - and we would love more people to speak to different languages," adding, "Tilly would have thought she heard a Cantonese word and quickly switched."

Die Idee? Maybe. Die Begründung? Wow. Ich mein… wow. Hatte ich es mir blöd vorgestellt? Ja.

Gewalt gegen Ausländer halt ein Wunschthema, egal was Gerichte sagen. AfD Verbot leider unmöglich, weil Gerichte könnten es verhindern.
Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:
There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time.

So you can become a senior fellow & director of military analysis without any kind of knowledge? Interesting.
China also makes semiconductors, though they are less advanced than those manufactured in U.S. supply chains.
China would likely continue selling these chips to the United States even after a war over Taiwan, as they do today. This would be enough to meet most U.S. needs because advanced semiconductors produced in Taiwan are most important for high-end consumer electronics, which are arguably less crucial to U.S. economic prosperity than other inputs.

The “profound changes” in rocket tech are not really connected to AI, so he is mostly wrong?
The cost of getting things into orbit has plummeted and it looks likely - if some of the large capacity rockets like Starship succeed - to fall further by absolutely vast amounts. There is all of this talk of things like space-based data centres. So the physical world looks like it's gearing up for profound changes as a consequence of leverage by AI. So I could see it happening.

Our blackshirt mob nearly murdered the wrong people and we are a little sorry about that.
Reform county councillor George Madgwick, who attended the scene, said hotel staff had shown him "proof" the guests were the touring cricket team, and had urged people online not to attend.
Speaking to the BBC, he said: "Someone online saw a group of what looked like foreign nationals leaving the coach and put a photo of it online and that's where it spurred from.
"It was mere speculation rather than based on truth or fact.
"In this case they have made a grave error, a grave mistake."

Second, it is past time for the CDU to reconsider the rigid Brandmauer. That does not mean kneeling before extremists; the AfD's stated goal is to destroy the CDU, not to work with it. And the CDU should not enable the entry to government of a party that opposes so much of what it stands for. But if the CDU signalled that it would not dogmatically exclude future co-operation with a party that shed its most radical ideas and politicians, it could eventually help boost the (relative) moderates within the AfD, some of whom are uneasy about their extreme comrades. The AfD's strength and confidence makes this harder than it once would have been. But an AfD that looks closer to Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy would be far preferable to the one that now sits on the outer fringe of Europe's right-wing populists.

Parts of the article are a bit strange though. I’d love to know what made this drone so special, that it couldn’t be build by hobbyists. Especially considering that the professional and hobby FPV scene is kind of tightly coupled.

American republicans are just a club for the worst people
"If we continually restrict the freedom of marriage as a legitimate social option, when we do this to people who are a ripe, fertile age and may have a pregnancy and a baby involved," said Representative Jess Edwards, a Republican state legislator in New Hampshire, "are we not in fact making abortion a much more desirable alternative, when marriage might be the right solution for some freedom-loving couples?”

Sure, but the analogy is nonsense. This is a case of removing the brakes to run a crash test and the car crashes not on the testing range, but into your neighbors house
It would be satisfying to say this was recklessness on OpenAl's part.
The best argument against that is an analogy I've seen a few people make: removing the brakes to run a crash test doesn't make the crash a crime. Reducing refusals during a cyber capability evaluation is standard industry practice, and the entire point of the exercise is to find the ceiling. OpenAl had rules forbidding this conduct, training meant to enforce them, and an isolated environment with network access limited to a single proxy.
Those measures failed. Failing isn't the same as not trying.

The very next chapter:
All in all, the curricula of many private boarding schools are based upon the cult of 'muscular Christianity' advocated with homo-erotic zeal by the Victorian writers Charles Kingsley and Thomas Hughes. As applied to education, this cult of manliness and godliness was admirably designed to fit boys for shouldering the burden of the heterosexually deprived white man in far-fung outposts of the Victorian empire, and for shaping up the sorts of leadership qualities required at Balaclava and on the North-West Frontier

Still working through the list, but it’s very funny that half of “On the Psychology of Military Incompetence” could be read as a targeted takedown of Pete Hegseth (written four years before he was born)
For the reader not previously versed in the psychology of authoritarianism the preceding chapter may have come as something of a surprise. At first sight the traits of orderliness, tough-mindedness, obedience to authority, punitiveness and the rest may well have seemed the very embodiment of hard-hitting masculinity -ideally suited to the job of being a soldier. Unfortunately, as represented in the authoritarian personality they are only skin deep-a britte crust of defences against feelings of weakness and inadequacy. The authoritarian keeps up his spirits by whistling in the dark. He is the frightened child who wears the armour of a giant. His mind is a door locked and bolted against that which he fears most: himself.

The “cryptographically signed results” is the cherry on the cake that is a) stupid (oracle problem) and b) gives them away as warmed up crypto era people. Still at it. Still clueless.
These pieces lay the foundation for a continuous, market-mediated, agent-based scientific economy. Imagine a funder posting a million-dollar bounty for the first validated therapeutic target for a rare disease. An agent working on adjacent problems notices a promising lead and posts a smaller bounty for replicating the finding. Other agents assess whether the problem falls within their competence, bid for the work, and contract an autonomous laboratory accessible through the internet, which runs the experiment and returns cryptographically signed results.
I guess we all have our dreams.

Colby: A couple of things. One, talk and action are different. Our policy, as the secretary has laid out, is strong and clear, but quiet. Measure what the United States and the United States Department of War is doing by actions and not what we call
"peacocking," which I think is really different from the last administration, where President Biden would speak off the cuff, for instance, about the issue of Taiwan.

It’s kind of impressive how he says nothing with a ton of words
It's a nonideological approach, but recalibrating and reassessing things in light of the current situation we face. Looking out at the world that President Biden left, there was a potential for simultaneous conflicts that we needed to be prepared for, and also, to do so in a realistic and sustainable way.
