Broadly it was technological and especially pharmacological development from the 1940s to the 1960s that shifted the dial. It was a great talk. Needless to say can't do it justice in a few slides...but these ones especially made me think...

Prof Fong argued, using maternal mortality as an example, that we spend too much time reflecting on the recent and flat bit - ie after about 1980...we should be asking what went right before then!

Something new for 1st post here. These few slides from my UCLH colleague @drkevinfong.bsky.social at @rauk.bsky.social ASM in London in 2024 stuck with me. Improved aircraft safety after 1970, wasn't so much checklists & behavioural change as better digital tech stabilising the aircraft.
