Yes! I don't understand current obsession with forcing history & literature to be 'relevant', to fit contemporary fixations, or idea that you have to 'be able to see yrself' in something to make it matter. It's a kind of narcissism. I love exploring the past *bcos it's different/not like or abt me*.

A lot of things. Village shop with a bigger room stocking guns & ammunition than the one with standard groceries & supplies. The fact the only UK news I saw on TV during fortnight I was there was a feature on a village 'cheese-rolling competition'. The fixations on religion & colour.

I felt more culturally alien visiting the US (despite language) than I have anywhere else – and that includes Gorbachev-era USSR.

Faculties and Schools are used interchangeably here in UK. The Oxbridge colleges are different to most other places – they're not residential elsewhere.

Right… Ours are in pre-existing towns/cities. The oldest – Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews, Glasgow & Aberdeen – are pre-Reformation, originally with ecclesiastical foundation; Edinburgh a late 16C civic foundation. The rest are all from within the last 200 yrs or so.

Well, we have those Schools, but Colleges are different: they were originally separate foundations in 15-16C. (Oxford & Cambridge have loads of them.)

A university may be made up of colleges. If physically separate, a college may have its degrees awarded by a university. As Arts & Humanities undergrad at St Andrews University, I was student of United College & did divinity course within St Mary's College. As postgrad, was in St Leonard's College.

US terminology confuses me a bit. Here in UK, schools are what children attend; & universities contain subject-based Schools (say, School of Law, School of Divinity, School of Science & Englineering, Business School, & c) or Faculties, but we never refer to university as 'school'.

Dr Nuits de Young @nuitsdeyoung.bsky.social · 2h
Do you mean a school (under 18s) or a university (over 18)? Private universities are v thin on the ground here in UK: I can only think of Buckingham.

Yes. St Andrews has grossly overexpanded for the size of the town. The cleaners now have to be bussed in from Glenrothes as they can no longer afford to live locally.

St Andrews is v much dominated by the university (& golf tourism). It's over-expanded in past few decades. I miss how it was in 1980s-early 90s.

A lot of ppl wd move out to live in flatshares, but I didn't fancy that. It was a small town, & in my day we didn't have to pay tuition fees & we had a maintenance grant (means tested) that covered rent & most living expenses.

Shinty clubs, too, in Scotland. They cd be quite loud in the pub in St Andrews in 1980s.

That's changed since my day (1980s). I stayed in a hall of residence for all 4 yrs of undergrad (Scottish MA Hons is 4 yrs), & then 3 yrs in a postgrad hall for 1st 3 yrs of PhD.

Today in why your librarian is stressed: academic journals increase in cost about 5% every single year while our funding continues to, at best, stagnate. And that's just the things we already purchase, much less the new acquisitions our patrons need or want.

Something I recall from a lot of hero tales & epics is that opposing characters don't *have to be* depicted as 'good vs evil'; that they're evenly matched & you cd tell the story as easily from either's pov. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

Niger’s crackdown on asexual “practices” is not isolated to the West African nation - it’s part of a greater trend of anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric worldwide
wearequeeraf.com
Why Niger explicitly criminalising asexuality is significant to everyone, regardless of identity
To understand Nigers asexuality criminalisation, we should see this law as part of a bigger – and growing – global trend among conservatives about 'traditional families'
