Before Frank Castle was The Punisher he compiled one of the best selling booklets of the 20th century - it had many titles including logarithmic and other tables for schools. Sales were ruined by the scientific calculator. Frank wanted revenge - in this lfe and the next.

I'm reading Scarlett Thomas' The Runner (2026) and there's a mention of hypnogogic jerks. So, I explore. Google emphatically says "No, you cannot die from a hypnic jerk" That's not true. It depends what you're doing at the time. If you're falling asleep ascending a mountain a hypnic jerk is bad.

Great day out yesterday. Had breakfast in a great, art deco café, E Pellicci on Bethnal Green Road. Then caught the Windrush Line, from Whitechapel to Crystal Palace to see the newly renovated, and still anatomically incorrect, dinosaurs. And a trip to the brilliant Crow on the Hill bookshop.

In UK HE there is long-standing confusion over the Oxford MA. "It has no subject or class, and the nominals 'MA' should be represented in place of, not in addition to, the 'BA' in the holder's signature and on documents such as CVs." The Oxford MA | New College share.google/uVx0L4YwcgN1...
The Oxford MA

In most UK universities, the Master of Arts is a free-standing graduate degree awarded by examination. In Oxford (as in Cambridge), the status of Master of Arts is a mark of seniority within the University which may be conferred 21 terms after matriculation. Please note the Oxford MA is about reaching a new status within the University and not an upgrade of your BA or an additional qualification. It therefore has no subject or class, and the nominals 'MA' should be represented in place of, not in addition to, the 'BA' in the holder's signature and on documents such as CVs.

If you have completed a BA or BFA you will be eligible to take an MA in or after the 21st term since you matriculated (i.e. seven years after matriculation). This is not an automatic process and to obtain your MA you must apply to graduate at a degree ceremony (either in person or in absentia). You must have had your BA or BFA conferred in order to take your MA. They can be conferred at the same ceremony provided that sufficient time has elapsed since you matriculated.

You are not at any point eligible to take an MA if your undergraduate degree is an undergraduate Masters degree (MBiochem, MChem, MCompSci, MEng, MMath, MMathCompSci, MMathPhil, MPhys, MPhysPhil).

Franz Fanon on the origin of wealth
The people come to understand that wealth is not the fruit of labour but the result of organised, protected robbery. Rich people are no longer respectable people; they are nothing more than flesh eating animals, jackals and vultures which wallow in the people's blood.

My husband plays the trumpet, which is a sort of loud pretzel originally invented to blow down the walls of fucking Jericho and, later, to let Civil War soldiers know it was time to kill each other in a river while you chilled eating pigeon in your officer's tent twenty miles away, yet some-how, in modern times, it has become socially acceptable to toot the bad cone inside your house before 10:00 a.m. because it's "your job" and your wife should "get up." What a world! If one was feeling uncharitable, one might describe the trumpet as a machine where you put in com-pressed air and divorce comes out, but despite this-despite operating a piece of biblical demolition equipment inside the home every bright, cold morning of his wife's one and only life-the trumpet is not the most annoying thing about my husband.

President Trump's reckless attempt to dismantle the Department of Education is an egregious attack on school kids across the nation. Not only will this jeopardize the education of millions of children, but it stands to strip billions in crucial funding from needy schools in underserved communities, and undermine decades of progress in ensuring equal access to quality education. Education is, as it should be, a fundamental responsibility of every level of government, and it should not be solely relegated to states, which vary wildly across the nation in philosophy, funding, and focus. New York stands with students, families, teachers and educators across the country in opposition to this illegal, unconstitutional, and destructive overreach, and we will continue fighting to ensure students here in New York have the tools they need to succeed."

Yourself there, take good note,

A criminal investigation into yourself has now been started by the Garda National Protective Services Bureau (GNPSB), under An Garda Síochána, so it has. You're being formally let know that your name came into it, and they've gathered information from all sorts of sources, so they have. Your potential criminal liability is under active and ongoing review, sure look, it is. This inquiry is being chased up with the full weight of the Irish law behind it, no two ways about it.

What with the height of international scrutiny following on from the Jeffrey Epstein case, any individual at all that's suspected of offences involving minors or online carry-on-they'll be met with a strict zero-tolerance approach, and no messing about. The GNPSB are working hand-in-glove with Europol and Interpol over this, so they are. There'll be no exceptions made, no sob stories listened to, and no slack given at all not a bit.

You've been formally identified as being within the scope of this investigation, sure, and it's being handled by the specialised units, so it is. The consequences arising out of this are serious in the extreme, no doubt about it, and could leave you facing significant legal, professional and personal repercussions, and that's no word of a lie, sure.

Now, what you're required to do

You're hereby instructed to provide a written statement, in your own words, within twenty-four (24) hours of you receiving this notice. That deadline is strict and final there'll be no extensions granted, under no circumstances at all, full stop.

If you fail to comply

Should you fail to respond within the time specified, this matter will go ahead without any further warning, so it …

Here's an interesting letter on the "whim of iron". A passing comment from a government minister soon becomes an essential, must have, by the time it reaches those who have to implement it. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
The vetting row (Robbins response to ‘cover-up’ question reveals debate over Mandelson vetting file, 22 April) reminds me of a Home Office term I learned while seconded there in the 2000s: the “whim of iron”. It described how a minister’s casual remark could solidify into an apparently immovable instruction by the time it reached frontline staff.

We were ordered to pilot an initiative on an estate hit by a high‑profile murder. Local commanders said that it was the wrong place and proposed a better one. Civil servants insisted the location was fixed. Only when my boss met the minister did it emerge that it had been no more than an offhand thought and he was happy for us to listen to local concerns and change it. It’s a reminder of how easily a passing notion can harden into policy once it enters the system.

The past creates the present and the present creates the past.
A handwritten extract from "The Enemy Within" by Seumas Milne, Verso, 1994.

British and U.S. electronic espionage networks have systematically breached the security of banking transactions throughout Europe in an effort to track the secret movement of NUM cash ... The surveillance drive had begun during the miners strike of 1984-5, but had continued for several years afterwards.
This vast electronic eavesdropping - using GCHQ and its outstations, as well as U.S. NSA facilities across Europe (its 'C-group' network) led to growing friction with the banks, which rely on an increasingly fragile international confidence that all transactions are genuinely private (p253)
