Worse than Threads? As we discuss in the latest pod episode, in 1981 a Defence Minister told Parliament the Russkies would need ONE THOUSAND MEGATONS to target our (dispersed) cruise missiles. That's a scenario five times worse than Threads. pod.fo/e/4d7892

On my ATOMIC HOBO podcast, we're going through the juicy stuff I found in the archives at London South Bank University. I'm sharing the archives on my Patreon page, but here's a snippet: surviving a nuclear blast by leaping into a pool with heavy clothes on. (Link to join us in the comments!)

Got my Threads and The War Game BluRays today from @severinfilms.bsky.social , and it comes with a miniature copy of Protect and Survive. I said "aw cute!" when I saw it. First time Protect and Survive has ever been described as "cute"?

Recording a pod on the use of libraries as nuclear shelters. It's cute that Staten Island told residents its libraries could provide shelter in war, the exception being Great Kills Library, as it was made of wood. Wooden building stuffed with paper? Great Kills indeed.

Monday's pod episode is on civil defence in North Carolina. Here's the state's portrayal of radiation casualties. I like how blunt the last box is: coffins and crosses. But in the top box, is there a wee man throwing his arms up in glee? "Yassss, no obvious effects!"

JC Penney provided clothing for the mannequins in the Nevada nuclear tests. They used 'before and after' pics of each one in this advert. You'll see some mannequins have an 'after' pic which is just a black space with the caption: MISSING. More in tomorrow's podcast episode.
