as a hater let me acknowledge something ai is good at: producing irritating discourse at scale this is usually because, like "ai" itself, people are talking about different things like they are one thing so let me disentangle, with statements numbered for easy disagreement

The most dangerous thing about AI is not that the machines might one day think. It is that we are being trained, by men with enormous financial gains riding on our acquiescence, to stop thinking for ourselves.

In case you weren't sure, it makes absolutely no sense to use gas to make electricity anymore. Not only is its climate impact on par with coal some of the time (methane leaks), but it's also flat out *more expensive* than solar + storage in nearly every scenario and in every part of the world.

One of the biggest problems with green technology is that big businesses can’t make endless money from it. Oil/gas is a consumable that they make money from pumping, transporting, refining etc. LOTS of money year over year The same is not true for wind/solar. That’s the biggest hurdle.

Alexander Rodchenko's classic Russian constructivist 'books' advertising poster; Lilya Brik's face has been replaced with Greta Thunberg's, and instead of shouting the word 'books,' a spray of geometric sunbeams are emanating from her mouth. Superimposed and beneath her is a Soviet propaganda poster of a furiously pointing Lenin. Lenin's skin is Cheeto orange and he wears a straw-yellow Trump wig.

A billionaire can get what they want with one donation to a political party. The rest of us must fight for years to get even the most basic rights recognised. Money destroys democracy, more than any other cause. The first step towards a better world is to stop the rich buying political outcomes.

This is true but I think it's important to clarify: we still know how to produce knowledge. Science, journalism, etc. still basically work, if done well. The crisis is that people don't trust those institutions any more. I'd characterize it as a social-trust problem.
