Is this true @ntcouncilteam.bsky.social? Irony is the council owns some e-bikes (which seem permanently to be in storage, but perhaps not in council buildings).

A busy day on the North Tyneside seafront, despite the unwelcome chill, so nice to see lots of folk using the cycleway, including small kids with their families and bigger kids with their friends. This is what it’s about. Oh, and a new bike hire spot at Tynemouth Surf Co.

All of our mayoral candidates agreed unequivocally that all possible schools should have school streets by 2030, in the words of our new mayor, Karen Clark “something the public can get behind”. We currently have 6. We have 56 first/primary schools & 4 middle schools. That’s a lot of work to do.
New mayor Karen Clark’s response to our questions about joined up walking and cycling networks and school streets, with the following section highlighted:

“I would agree that delivering a high quality safe set of facilities around schools, including more school streets, is a great way to make progress, this is something I want to see funded and something the public can get behind.”

So the first real policy decision on active travel or road safety by this government is a law targeting cyclists which will do nothing for road safety, briefed to a newspaper which openly hates cycling. Whatever your hopes for active travel from current ministers, perhaps calibrate these downwards.

A successful day at No Time For Waste at the Linskill today, chatting to folk about walking and cycling in North Tyneside. Issues raised around active travel links to public transport, dangerous junctions on the Coast Rd cycle path, and pavements damaged by regular & normalised vehicle parking.

I wonder how the 28 people who were vocally opposed to this scheme, on the basis they quite like where they can currently park their cars, might feel knowing that a child has been knocked off his bike where there could’ve been a safer alternative?

A young person was knocked off his bike by a hit-and-run driver this morning outside John Spence School - exactly where the abandoned Preston Rd cycle path should have delivered him safely. Who will be held responsible and who will respond, before this happens again?

Did anyone see my son get knocked off his bike outside john spence high school this morning? It was a hit and run! He doesn't know what color make or model the car was any info greatly appreciated.

Meanwhile, Preston Road is being resurfaced - we know (unlike FB commenters) that these are different budgets, but pretty galling drivers get a smoother ride while those who cycle get nothing (except fewer potholes to dodge whilst also dodging drivers)

This Cullercoats roundabout is so hostile for pedestrians and cyclists, with necessarily wide arms, all at odd angles, and just one zebra. With a busy shop, the seafront, the metro, and cafes all accessible via the different arms, it really does need a redesign.

Front Street, Tynemouth. This car can legally be parked here - on what appears itself to be private land, not public highway. But it shouldn’t be able to get there, and only can because a bollard is missing.
One of three photos, each showing a wider view than the previous, of a car parked on what looks to be footway (but is legally a private forecourt), surrounded by a cordon of bollards that has one bollard missing.

Seatonville Road always come to mind for us when we see this kind of transformation of a wide, local road. And perhaps also Preston Road North, where apparently delivering safe cycling infrastructure is too (politically?) difficult to deliver. Any other North Tyneside examples?

This is the excerpt for this stretch from the plans - difficult to assess the actual widths, but it suggests: - cycle path was planned to be wider than footpath - cycle path was planned to be as wide as each half of the carriageway In reality, neither of those things is true.

This path gets extremely busy with pedestrians - which is great! When it was a shared use path, I avoided riding on it when it was very busy, but still sometimes experienced hostility and once even a threat of physical violence from pedestrians. I hope but doubt this will resolve that conflict.
